PPL engineers are utilising a “cable
curing” technique to inject new life into
its underground electric cables in Lehigh
County, Pennsylvania.
The process injects silicone fluid into the
cable to increase its life expectancy.
PPL officials say cable curing will prevent
future problems. Sarah Filszar, regional
director of operations for PPL, said: “Over
time, the cables start to deteriorate and
break down, and when that happens we
have a greater likelihood for a short circuit
or a power outage.”
PPL officials estimate that the process costs
about half the cost of cable replacement.
The cable curing is an ongoing process
throughout the company’s area of
operation.
