Rural network Eastern Oregon Telecom (EOT) has contracted Huawei to provide its gigabit passive optical network (GPON) solution to a network of rural homes and businesses in Hermiston, Oregon.

The fiber broadband rollout by EOT and Huawei will also bring new services, including voice over IP and Internet protocol television (IPTV) to the community. Bill Gerski, VP of sales for Huawei USA, said: ”Rural communities in America, which are typically underserved by broadband, arebeginning to recognize the economic and social benefits of having fast and reliable connectivity. Huawei is committed to working with rural carriers and communities across the US to help them get connected.”

Florida-basedWireMeshCorporation is to invest $13.1 million in land, building work and machinery. Wire Mesh plant manager Al Smith expects the company will have equipment in place by May, with operations beginning in August. The company specializes in the manufacture of steel wire products for use in steel reinforcement for concrete construction projects including bridges and parking garages.
