90 years is a long time in business, and it is only right that Magnetic Analysis Corporation be applauded for reaching the prestigious milestone. The company has suppliesd inspection instruments and system for metal manufacturers since it was founded in 1928. Testing then usually meant destructive sampling procedures, but the company developed electromagnetic techniques to non-destructively test steel bars without modifying the product. In 1934, the company introduced the first successful tester to identify cracks in steel bars in a production mill. The full story can be found on page 9. Companies will also be turning attention to the IWCS Symposium and Exhibition next month, being staged in Rhode Island, from 14 th to 17 th October. This important and informative symposium is a leading venue for new technologies in cable and connectivity materials, products, processes and applications. Magnetic Analysis Corporation (MAC) is celebrating 90 years of designing and supplying inspection instruments and systems for metal manufacturers. Founded in 1928 in Long Island City at a time when testing usually meant destructive sampling procedures, MAC developed electromagnetic techniques to non-destructively test steel bars without modifying the product. In 1934, MAC introduced the first successful tester to identify cracks in steel bars in a production mill. MAC has also developed rotary eddy current testers, phase gating, pulsed eddy current, polar presentation, fully digitized test instrumentation, rotary ultrasonic testers, advanced flux leakage inspection, phased array and other advancements in non- destructive testing.

MAC continues to develop ways to help worldwide bar, wire and parts producers meet demanding specifications. New HQ is open for business

Helukabel recently held an open house and cable ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open its new US headquarters in Chicago. The new energy-efficient facility sits on an eight-acre site in West Dundee, and is the first phase of a project that allows for future on-site expansions as the company continues to grow. The investment marks an important milestone in the company’s short history in the USA as it solidifies its continued commitment and expansion in North America.

Helukabel USA, which started operations in 2007, has developed quickly in the US industrial cable and wire sector focusing on high product availability and short lead times. “The demand for our branded products such as Traycontrol, Topflex and Topserv has required us to rapidly increase our warehousing capacity and operational capabilities in a short period of time,” said Helukabel USA president Markus Dannheim. Construction of the new HQ began in November 2017, and the company began operating out of the new facility in May.

Custom acquisition

Southwire has acquired Garvin Industries of Illinois, a manufacturer of electrical, lighting and low voltage products that has been in business for 120 years. Garvin Industries is described as a designer of economical solutions to common installation problems. The Garvin team is experienced in the custom design and manufacture of products to customer specifications. “As a company, our goal is to grow 50 percent over the next five years,” said Rich Stinson, Southwire’s president and CEO. “The acquisition of Garvin helps us further expand our product offering and will give us a broader opportunity to provide custom solutions for our electrical customers.”

The acquisition includes the company’s manufacturing, distribution and corporate support functions and will add approximately 30 employees as a part of the company’s tools and assembled products business unit. “Garvin Industries, with its continued focus on customer service, value and innovation, is the perfect addition to our business, with products that are used every day with our core wire and cable products,” said Brandon Moss, Southwire’s president of tools and assembled products business unit. “We are excited to welcome Garvin Industries to the Southwire family, and look forward to better serving our customers through this growth.”

Wire acquisition

Mexican industrial corporation Xignux, based in Nuevo Leon, has completed its acquisition of American Bare Conductor of LaSalle, Illinois. The 290,000ft 2 facility is nowpart of Xignux’s Viakable CME wire and cable division (VKMUSA), manufacturing electric wire and cable. “We are happy to be in LaSalle and grow our business in the Illinois Valley,” said Adolfo Riveron, chief executive officer of Viakable LaSalle. The city of LaSalle and the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce (IVAC) provided important business retention

assistance to Xignux Viakable. “IVAC was pleased to assist with the new acquisition, helping the development team with supporting data,” said IVAC executive director Joni Hunt. American Bare Conductor, established in 2006, will operate under the name Viakable Manufacturing (VKMUSA) and will service the USmarket through its parent company CME, which is an electrical wire and cable supplier. Xignux comprises four divisions: cables, transformers, infrastructure and foods, operating over 25 production facilities and a diverse group of distribution centers in Mexico, the US, India, Brazil and Colombia.

Power in Brazil

Brazil had 1,601MW of grid-connected solar power at the end of June 2018, according to a monthly bulletin on the monitoring of the electric system from the Brazilian ministry of energy and mines (MEM). This capacity is represented by 1,307MW of large-scale PV projects, selected in auctions held by the Brazilian government, and 296MW of distributed generation solar power generators (up to 5MW).

At the end of June 2017, utility-scale solar reached a share of just 145MW, while DG installations totaled 92MW. Over the past 12 months, a total of 1.36GW was connected to the country’s grid, with strong growth in both segments. Most of this 1.36GW, however, was installed in the second half of 2017.

A Perth, Ontario, manufacturer of stainless steel wire is welcoming the federal government’s study of emergency protective measures for the steel industry as it faces pressure from American tariffs and foreign dumping. Mr Paul From, president and CEO of Central Wire Industries, has been advocating for safeguards for the steel industry. He said: “We’re thrilled. We were hoping this announcement was going to come. From our perspective, it means that [to] anyone who is thinking about just moving large quantities of material into the Canadian market, there may be some ramification to that and to think twice before you do it.” Mr From said that he is seeing large quantities of cheap steel from Asia coming to the market, driving down prices and making Canadian producers less competitive. On top of that, his clients in the US have to pay a 25 percent tariff to bring in his products. Mr From said: “If this market gets flooded, and inundated with products, it just makes our business next to impossible to run. If we can’t compete, it would just mean jobs — for this company and Canada — that would leave.” Central Wire Industries employs 85 people in Perth, producing stainless steel wire for applications from medical tools to oil and gas extraction. The plant has been in operation since the 1950s and is also the headquarters of the company, which has plants in the US.

Duke Energy is among the largest energy holding companies in the US. The Duke Energy Foundation recently awarded nearly $300,000 in grants to 11 South Carolina organizations that impact communities served by Duke Energy. “Non-profit organizations are often the first line of defense in communities across our state,” said Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe, South Carolina state president for Duke Energy. “These organizations must have well- trained professionals leading those efforts. That is why we support capacity-building initiatives that strengthen the non-profit community and help non-profits fulfill their missions.” At Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, the Non-Profit Leadership Institute (NPLI) brings together non-profit professionals fromacross the Pee Dee region to develop and enhance their skills. The Duke Energy Foundation funds 40 scholarships to attend NPLI and to create a workshop on grant writing.

“We’re appreciative of Duke Energy’s continued partnership with Francis Marion University and its support for our Non-Profit Leadership Institute,” said Francis Marion University president Fred Carter. “The NPLI is one of our most successful regional outreach initiatives. Better educated non-profit leaders make the Pee Dee a better place to live and work, and it wouldn’t happen without the sponsorship of community partners such as Duke Energy.” Other organizations to receive Duke Energy Foundation grants include: Chapman Cultural Center, Chester County Historical Society, Greenwood Community Theatre, Peace Center for the Performing Arts, and the American Red Cross. The Building Europe Link to Latin America (BELLA) consortium has signed an agreement with EllaLink to deploy an underwater fiber optic cable between Europe and Latin America. The European commission is investing around €26.5 million, in addition to the consortium’s public stakeholders. One of the group’s aims is to guarantee a dedicated section of the cable to link European and Latin American research and education networks, funded by €10 million under the Horizon 2020 program from the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT); and €8.5 million of funding from the Directorate- General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) under the Copernicus program.

The subsea cable is scheduled to be in operation between Portugal and Brazil in 2020, with plans to extend to both Latin Americaandwithin theEU. Belgium set for more power

Scheduled for completion in 2020, a new offshore wind farm is under development in Belgium. To develop the necessary submarine inter- array power cable system, Northwester NV has awarded a contract to NSW, a subsidiary of General Cable and now part of the Prysmian Group. The offshore farm is situated in the Belgian North Sea, about 50km northwest of Ostend, Belgium. NSW will design, produce and deliver 25km of 33kV submarine cables for the inter- array cabling of the Northwester 2 wind farm project and handle the pre-operation cable termination and testing. The cables will be delivered next summer.

“This is a clear indication of how NSW’s experience and know-how in submarine and offshore cable systems can further strengthen Prysmian Group leadership in the offshore wind market, leveraging also on a wider portfolio of products, technologies and assets,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP projects BU, Prysmian Group. NSW, headquartered in Nordenham, Germany, close to the North Sea, offers repeater and repeaterless fiber optic submarine cable systems and accessories, turnkey submarine power cable systems, and repair and maintenance services for optimal submarine network availability.

Rebar mill upgrade

Pakistani rebar steel producer Kamran Steel Re-Rolling Mills (Pvt) Ltd has placed an order with Primetals Technologies to modernize the company’s existing rebar mill in Lahore. The project marks phase one of a three-phase expansion plan. The first phase will increase rebar production capacity to 150,000 metric tons per year, increase yield, reduce energy consumption and improve rolling efficiency. The equipment supplied is designed for future phase three requirements. Hot commissioning is expected for the third quarter of 2019. Primetals Technologies is responsible for engineering the plant and will supply the required process equipment as well as electrics and automation. The mechanical supply includes an upgrade of the reheating furnace run-out roller way, in order to allow direct billet transfer to the new continuous roughing train. The rolling line consists of a new eight-stand roughing mill with HVHVHVHV arrangement and a new six-stand intermediate mill in HVHVHV arrangement, both in-line with the existing finishing mill in order to eliminate cobbles. Both mills will be equipped with fifth- generation Red Ring stands. The finished rebar mill will be equipped with a total of 14 stands. North Sea progress

Boskalis Subsea’s cable laying vessel, Stemat Spirit , is laying inter-array cables for EnBW’s 497MW Hohe See wind farm in the German North Sea. Loading of the first batch of cables began at the end of July. Boskalis is responsible for the supply, installation, burial, termination and testing of the seventy-nine 33kV inter-array cables. The company will also carry out the inter- array cable works on the adjacent 112MW Albatros, as well as interconnect the two wind farms. Hohe See is located 95km north of Borkum and 100km northwest of Helgoland, in the immediate vicinity of Albatros. Offshore construction of the two wind farms commenced in April 2018, with the installation of the first monopiles. Hohe See and Albatros are scheduled for full commissioning by 2019. Stemat Spirit is laying inter-array cables for EnBW’s 497MW Hohe See wind farm in the German North Sea

Deutsche Offshore Consult (DOC) is to supervise the inner array cable installation works at Trianel’s 200MW Borkum West 2.2 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. DOC’s task will begin with cable loading and preparatory work for the cable pull-ins at the substation, as well as onboard the Seaway Aimery cable-laying vessel. Quality assurance and communication with the project office on land are also part of DOC’s work package. Cable laying and burial works will be carried out by Seaway Aimery and Seaway Moxie . The cabling consists of a total of four loops, and the inner array cables are magnetized so that they can be located after burial. The wind farm will feature 32 Senvion 6.3MW turbines and is scheduled to be fully operational before the end of 2019. The project will export power via the existing substation of the 200MW Borkum West 2.1 wind farm, which went online in 2015. Kazakhstan aims for green energy

Sampsistemi, part of the SAMP Group, has announced the expansion of operations of its China-based subsidiary Sampsistemi (Shanghai) Co Ltd. As a result of the recent acquisition of Setic and Pourtier, Sampsistemi is to expand and strengthen the existing Chinese footprint. The company will expand the Setic plant in Changzhou and make a significant investment in infrastructure. The Setic plant, located in the Xinbei district, is currentlydedicated to themanufactureof rotating machines and related equipment for the wire and cable industry. The expansion plan will equip the unit with the latest assembly lines for wire and cable machinery and with enhance research and development and testing facilities. Sampsistemi currently has 58 production plants and 4,600 employees worldwide.

President Nazarbayev

A 42MW wind power plant is planned for the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. Under the terms of the agreement investors plan to build 17 wind generators, each with a capacity of 2.5kW, at a cost of around $60 million. President Nazarbayev’s ambitious 2050 strategy is for Kazakhstan to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewable and alternative energy sources. The strategy is a part of the country’s initiative to transfer itself from one of the world’s major hydrocarbon energy producers to a “green economy” model. Renewable energy production volumes will grow to three times the current level, according to Kazakhstan’s ministry of energy. Within three years over 100 alternative energy facilities will operate in the country, compared to the current 50. The new facilities will include 23 wind energy plants, 17 solar power stations, and 13 hydroelectric power stations, as well as several biogas plants.

Offshore contract

Prysmian Group has a new contract from Ørsted Wind Power A/S to supply submarine inter-array cables for what will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm — Hornsea Project Two, located 89km off the UK’s Yorkshire coast. Prysmian will design, manufacture, supply, terminate and test the cable system that will connect 110 of the 165 wind turbines and the offshore substation platform. The project involves over 300km of 66kV inter- array cables with EPR insulation and single wire armoring systems plus all related accessories. European Rubber Journal reports that Belgium-based NV Bakaert SA has announced a 50 percent increase, as of August, in prices of imported wire rod for its rubber reinforcement products in North America. The increase “reflects the aggregate impact of changes in sourcing, wire rod price evolutions, import duties and anti-dumping tariffs,” the group said, in its half-year financial results issued in July. It added that wire rod imports for Bekaert’s two rubber reinforcement plants in the US were not affected by import duties in the first half of 2018.

Prysmian Group has signed an agreement with the Chinese contractor Talesun (acting on behalf of Shanghai Electric) for the supply of cables, accessories, monitoring systems, services and project supervision for the Cauchari solar park in Argentina. The315MWphotovoltaicplant projectwill be at an altitude of 4,100m in an area of huge solar resource. The solar park will generate a monthly average of 55,073MWh, which will be conveyed to the 345kV line that links the Chilean town of Andes with the town of Cobos, in the province of Salta. The Cauchari solar park is the first project officially signed by the governments of Argentina and China as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Prysmian will provide

over 3,600kmof instrumentationandcontrol, medium voltage, low voltage and solar cables from its Tianjin and Yixing plants, as well as 1,100 medium voltage accessories and connectors from the Yixing plant; 100 Pry-Cam grids; and one Pry-Cam portable, for monitoring, from Prysmian Electronics. Supervision services for both MV accessories and Pry-Cam will be supplied by the team in Argentina. “We leveraged the internal synergies within the group, with the close cooperation of the different regions and teams involved, to fulfill the complex requirements of the project. This is amilestone example of global integration and teamwork within Prysmian,” explainedMatteo Bavaresco, CEOPrysmian Group China.

Ducab was among the few brands to be shortlisted from over 1,500 brands in the UAE, voted through independent research by the Superbrands Council selection process. With six manufacturing facilities across four sites in the UAE, Ducab is prominent in the development, design, manufacture, marketing and distribution of copper and aluminum wire and cable products. Ducab competed with international names in an online poll, and was awarded the Superbrands title for market presence, product quality, consumer confidence, continuity, accounting practices, customer loyalty and market acceptance.

South telecommunications company KT has won a $47 million contract to install fiber optic cables in the Philippines. The project was awarded by the local Internet service provider, Converge ICT Solutions, as part of a cable network under construction in the northern regions of Luzon Island, the Philippines’ biggest island. The project is part of Converge’s plan for a national deployment of cables. Philippines is comprised of around 7,000 islands with sporadic Internet speeds, depending on region. KT will build 1,570km of cables to cover half of Luzon’s homes. KT has built 5,500km of cable outside South Korea, in places such as Myanmar and Bangladesh, and will install cables specifically designed and optimized for the Philippines. Korean

Contract for an Oman first

Construction has begun at Oman’s first wind farm, the 50MW Harweel project in the southern Dhofar governate. The wind farm is being built by Spanish engineering firm TSK. The main turbine components of the site will arrive in Oman in September, and installation of the project’s 13 GE 3.8-130 models will start the following month. Commissioning of the wind farm, owned by Abu Dhabi renewables firm Masdar and the state-owned Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO), is due in early 2019. Once complete it will provide power to the national utility, Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), until 2033. Oman plans to source ten percent of its electricity from renewables by 2025, according to the OPWP’s seven-year statement. The utility also plans to procure a 150MW extension to the Harweel project, which would be commissioned in 2023.

Nexans will provide a variety of instrumentation and fiber optic telecommunication cables for Oman’s first integrated downstream petrochemicals complex. The $4.5 billion Liwa Plastics Industries Complex (LPIC) project is under development by Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic). Orpic’s complex will include a refinery, aromatics plant, steam cracker and downstream polypropylene and polyethylene plants, making it one of the best integrated refinery and petrochemical facility combinations in the world. With the new facility, plastics production will be increased by one million tonnes, allowing Orpic an annual production for a total of 1.4 million tonnes of polyethylene and polypropylene. LPIC will be equipped with Nexans’ instrumentation, fiber optic telecommunication cables and fieldbus cables, supplied through the group’s established partnership with the distributor Rexel. The cables will feature Nexans’ Hypron ® design, developed and tested to provide an alternative to lead-sheath cables for onshore oil and gas installations. The LPICprojectwill enter thecommissioning phase at the end of 2018, ready for commercial operation from 2020.

Facebook’s 41.6666 percent stake has emerged as the dominant shareholder in a planned new cable linking Hong Kong, Taiwan and California. The Hong Kong-Americas (HKA) cable, announced in January 2018, will have a total design capacity of 76.8Tbps, or 12.8Tbps per fiber pair, and is due to enter service in late 2020. Partners in the project include two of the three Chinese carriers as well as Tata Communications and Telstra, but Edge USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Facebook, will be the dominant shareholder. Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) has the contract to build the cable. The HKA cable will be 13,780km in total length, including branches. There will be two landing stations in the US, at Hermosa Beach and Manchester, both in California, and two in Asia, at Chung Hom Kok, Hong Kong, and at Toucheng, Taiwan. Facebookand Telstrawill own the Toucheng branch, with Facebook having a two-thirds stake.

Following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that forced the shutdown of all nuclear power plants, Japan’s ministry of economy, trade and industry asked the country to conserve electricity during the hot summer months. However, with the rise of solar power, the Japanese government has refrained from issuing requests since 2016, with trade minister Hiroshige Seko announcing on 24 th July 2018 that special energy-saving efforts are unnecessary. As temperatures reached record highs across Japan this summer, solar power helped to weather the surge in electricity usage. A representative of Tokyo Electric Power Co Holdings (TEPCO) said that during times of peak demand the company can obtain nearly ten million kilowatts of solar power, or about 20 percent of total power needed. A substantial portion of this is provided by companies and households equipped with solar panels, who sell their surplus power to the utility. Before the 2011 earthquake and subsequent Fukushima Daiichi disaster, nearly 30 percent of TEPCO’s annual electricity output was nuclear-derived.

SBSS’s new HP-1500 plow, an advanced subsea cable burial tool which can achieve up to3.3mtrenchdepthwhilst simultaneously laying cable, has completed mobilization on the SBSS vessel CS Fu Hai. The HP-1500 plow, manufactured by SMD, has two different configurations: 2.2m standard jetting share, and 3.3m extension boot jetting share. A newly designed buoyant umbilical enables the HP-1500 plow to bury cable with a jetting share up to 1,500m water depth. Equipped with powerful submersible water jetting packages, the HP-1500 plow will bury various types of cable, including telecommunication, power and umbilical cable, precisely and in a wide range of seabed conditions.

Vodafone Wholesale, a subsidiary of Vodafone Ghana, has constructed a second fiber optic network link to connect Ghana to countries within the West African sub-region, including Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo. A statement, issued in Accra, said: “The link, which is located at Dakola, a border town between Ghana and Burkina Faso, will provide reliable Internet services to operators andcorporate customers seeking to expand their services to the landlocked countries within West Africa.” The managing director of Vodafone Wholesale, Ms Angela Mensah-Poku, commented: “The latest project affirms our commitment to driving Ghana’s digital agenda. Customers now have the option to choose between the interconnection at Dakola and Cinkase to transport Internet services beyond Ghana. Additionally, customers currently on the Cinkase link can now fall on the Dakola link as backup in the event of any downtime.” The Dakola link is currently facilitating the World Bank-funded West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Project for the government and people of Burkina Faso.
