Plans for the largest offshore wind project in the US state of Virginiahavebeenbrandeda“hugeeconomicopportunity” for the state. The American Wind Energy Association claims that Dominion Energy’s plans for the project – located in the 112,800 acres it leases from the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) – will strengthen the state’s economy, and bring highly skilled careers and new investments in shipbuilding, port and coastal infrastructure to the region. Ocean survey work is expected to begin next year and the construction and operations plan will be submitted to BOEM in 2022, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2024 and additional phases coming online in 2025 and 2026, giving 2,600MW of energy generating capacity. One hundred and twenty new jobs are expected to be created following the launch of Sequel Wire and Cable, a start-up manufacturer that is establishing a new manufacturing facility in Argos, Indiana.
