Serving the under served

Alaskan telecom provider GCI has been awarded a federal grant of $25 million to build a fiber network serving the Aleutian communities in Alaska. The grant is another award from the USDA Rural Utility Service’s ReConnect program, and is given in support of GCI’s Alaska United-Aleutians Fiber project to provide terrestrial broadband service to underserved areas of the state. The new infrastructure will bring broadband to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor

and five other communities. Subject to permits and other contingencies, the project, including a new 1,280km submarine fiber optic system from Kodiak along the south side of the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutians to Unalaska, should be completed by the end of 2022. The total cost of the project is $58 million, with GCI to provide $33 million in additional funding.
