Smart statistics gathering

Verizon and NEC have completed a proof of concept (PoC) process that uses existing fiber optic cables as distributed optical sensors to collect information on city traffic and road conditions. The trial used NEC’s latest optical sensor technology with software supported by artificial intelligence. Previously, surveyors or engineers have needed to lay purpose- built fiber in shallow ground trenches to gather and synthesize information.

Combined with NEC’s optical sensor technology, Verizon can gather data using non-purpose built fiber already laid in the ground. The technology could lead to, or improve on, other solutions that support public functions, such as helping first responders detect and respond to gunshots, and enhancing the ability of municipalities to detect infrastructure deterioration.
