Schneider Electric has a $5.2 million contract to design, engineer and build a new microgrid at the port of Long Beach in southern California. The company will create a microgrid technology demonstration that will include an integrated system of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and microgrid controls. The port of Long Beach is also set for a huge infusion of electric vehicle infrastructure, installing around 839 new charging sites. Schneider Electric’s $5.2 million contract with the port is part of a $7.1 million project, partly funded by a $5 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The project will include installation of a 300kW array photovoltaic (PV) system for energy production, integration of a 250kW microgrid-extending mobile battery energy, a 500kW diesel generator and the installation of additional microgrid controls to allow demand response, peak shaving, and islanded operations for energy resilience. As part of the project, the energy control center will leverage 330kW and 670kWh stationary battery energy storage.

Belgian developer Northwester 2, a joint venture between Parkwind and Sumitomo Corporation, has selected Nexans to provide an export cable system for its 219MW Northwester 2 offshore wind farm. In November 2017 Northwester 2 issued a tender for design, manufacture, supply, installation and termination works on a 17km 225kV three-phase submarine cable. The Northwester 2 offshore wind farm will comprise 23 MHI Vestas 9.5MW wind turbines and will be connected to Elia’s modular offshore grid (MOG). The project is scheduled to enter the construction phase in spring 2019. Other than Nexans and MHI Vestas, the key suppliers involved in the project are Jan De Nul, in charge of the fabrication and installation of foundations and the wind turbine installation; Bladt Industries, which will design and fabricate the offshore high voltage substation; and NSW, which is tasked with manufacturing the inter-array cables. offshore wind
