Chinese take away a world record

Theworld’s first 1,100kVUHVDC transmission line has been completed with the last large-span towers put in place over the Yangtze River in East China’s Anhui province. The transmission line starts from the Changji Hui autonomous prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and ends in the town of Guquan, Wuhu City in East China’s Anhui, passing through six provinces and an autonomous region. The Changji-Guquan line, the world’s first ±1,100 kV UHVDC link, sets a new world record in terms of voltage level, transmission capacity and distance.

It will be capable of transporting 12,000 megawatts of electricity — the equivalent of 12 large power plants and 50 percent more than the ±800kV UHVDC links currently in operation. The line stretches for 3,304.7km, making it currently the UHVDC power transmission project with the highest voltage, highest transmission capacity, and longest transmission distance in the world. When fully operational the link will be able to feed eight 500kV and two 1,000kV AC lines – delivering power equivalent to twice the average annual power consumption of Switzerland.
