Network to exclude China and Hong Kong

Google and Facebook plan to activate the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) between the US, the Philippines and Taiwan. Although originally planned to be the first submarine Internet cable network to connect the US and Hong Kong, sections running to Hong Kong and China will remain inactive amidst security concerns and the ongoing conflict between Washington and Beijing.

PLCN’s 12,800km cable has an estimated capacity of 120TB per second, making it the highest capacity trans-Pacific route. Much of the route’s fiber optics are the property of Pacific Light Data Communication, acompany that was sold to the Beijing-based broadband provider Dr Peng Telecom & Media Group, in 2017. Security concerns have since hovered around the project, due to Dr Peng’s links with Huawei.
