Temporary shutdown for wire mill

Liberty Steel has shut down its Georgetown, South Carolina, wire rod mill for three months, due to declines in demand during the pandemic. The mill’s rolling operations have stopped and will be kept in “care and maintenance” so they can be reopened quickly when the market improves.

producing at a slower rate with plans to increase to 441,000 short tons per year. This is the latest setback for a mill that UK- based Liberty hoped to upgrade in order to boost production in Georgetown as part of its expansion in the US. The Georgetown mill was supplied with semi-finished steel billets from Liberty’s steel mill in Peoria, Illinois, which will now fulfill all customer orders for wire rod.
