Cable gathering

HVDC projects

Oman Cables Industry (OCI) recently held a customer gathering and technical seminar on fire survival cables and wires, in partnership with its regional distributor, Electro Trade Company (ETC). The seminar was held to introduce OCI’s new logo and to highlight the safety features required in wires and cables used in the commercial/residential and construction industry, especially for extended protection during a fire. OCI, a Prysmian Group company, has developed a range of specified fire survival cable and wire products in line with international specifications and testing methodologies. The presentation expanded on cable selection, storageandhandlingprocedures. Members of the audience, which included consultants in the industry, were guided on some of the technical specifications and requirements. OCI develops, manufactures and markets a range of electrical cables that includes medium and low voltage power cables, control cables, pilot cables, overhead power transmission line conductors and building wires. Sumitomo Electric Industries has completed two HVDC interconnector cable projects using cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated cables. The first project involved construction of a 400kV HVDC XLPE environment-friendly cable system for Nemo Link, a joint venture between National Grid in the UK and ELIA in Belgium. The interconnector is claimed to be the highest voltage in the world for an HVDC-XLPE cable system and will connect the electricity systems of the UK and Belgium via subsea cables. Sumitomo Electric’s subsidiary, J-Power Systems, delivered the project as part of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, awarded by Nemo Link in 2015. Sumitomo Electric’s second project involved construction of the 250kV Hokuto- Imabetsu HVDC Link connecting Hokkaido and Honshu, on behalf of Hokkaido Electric Power Company (HEPCO). The 250kV HVDC XLPE cable will increase transmission capacity between Japan’s main island, Honshu, andHokkaido, Japan’s northern island.
