Firstly, happy New Year to everyone. Now the Christmas festivities are but a distant memory, it is back to work with news that General Cable is being sold to Prysmian Group for $30 a share – valuing the company at some $3 billion. The new group will provide a footprint in more than 50 countries worldwide with an increase of the Prysmian presence in North and South America and Europe. The full story can be found on page 9. Around 60 new jobs will be created by Southwire as it expands its distribution facilities in the west Georgia area. A new 400,000ft 2 property is under development which will accelerate the company’s corporate growth. See page 11 for full details. A new 8,000-mile Pacific subsea cable is due to land in the next few months, linking Oregon to Asian landing stations in Chongming, Nanhui, Lingang, Busan, Toucheng and Maruyama. The cable will provide capacity up to 80Tbps. You can read more on page 16.
