The new facility is Google’s 14 th global site, joining existing assets in the US, Chile, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Taiwan and Singapore. At the start of 2019, Google CEO Sundar Pichai detailed the company’s $13 billion investment plan for data centers across the US, giving Google a presence in 24 US states in total, with data centers in 13 states. Google also plans to invest in a new data center in Hamina, Finland - an addition to the company’s existing data center campus housing one of the most advanced, and efficient, data centers in Google’s portfolio.

Google will build its second Latin American data center facility, located withinaduty-free tax zoneat Uruguay’s Science Park in Canelones. The decision to launch the new facility in Uruguay was made in 2017, after the installation of the Tannat cable that links Uruguay with Brazil and Argentina.

The 2,000km system was a joint project between Google and Antel Uruguay.

In addition, the project has been boosted by the presence of the Google Currie cable, which links Chile to the US along the entire west coast. The installation of the 10,000km system was completed in April 2019.
