Defense fiber cables W L Gore & Associates Inc has launched new fiber optic cables, 1.8mm Simplex, with high impact resistance for extreme defense aircraft environments. This version exceeds the stringent new JN1177 and EN4641-301 industry standards for greater durability while maintaining high bandwidth data and video transmission on 10Gb avionics networks. Gore’s 1.8mm Simplex exceeds the minimum weight impact requirements specified in these standards for enhanced crush and impact protection while retaining its original optical properties. This version is also resistant to abrasion, scrapes, and the aggressive chemicals and fluids that aircraft typically experience during complex installation, maintenance and repeated flight conditions. Even after exposure to a wide range of temperatures, this rugged cable is said to have endured high-intensity vibration and

mechanical shock without degradation or optical loss. Gore’s combination of cable materials increases fiber movement under compression and so improves termination with standard aerospace connector systems. Diamond dies Fort Wayne Wire Die’s latest products are nano diamond coated dies (DCD) for conductor cable stranding, bunching and compacting applications. Nano DCDs are designed for improved surface finish, reduced die resistance, minimumdiewear and longer lifecompared to tungsten carbide. Nano DCDs are available in sizes up to 3.9″ (100mm).

The dies are made from tungsten carbide coated with a 30 micron thick layer of nanocystalline diamond particles which, after polishing, become extremely smooth compared to carbide or polycrystalline diamond dies. This highly polished die surface minimizes die pull for improved energy efficiency in stranding machines, impacts safety
