The new cable laying vessel built by Colombo Dockyard for Kokusai Cable Ship Co Ltd

Shipbuilder delivers a first

Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard PLC has delivered its first modern cable laying vessel, built for Kokusai Cable Ship Co Ltd (KCS) Japan. This is the biggest vessel, both in terms of length and price, ever built by Colombo Dockyard. The ship measures 113.1m x 21.5m with an 8.8m depth, and has a maximum load laying draft of approximately 7.1m. It has a deadweight carrying capacity of 5,757 DWT and a speed of 14.5 knots, and can accommodate 80 people. This vessel is intended for subsea installation and repair works of optical and power cables. The forward tank has been fitted with a carousel system with a spooling arm.

The vessel is also eco- friendly, with systems in place to reduce harmful emissions as well as waste storage solutions, water ballast treatment systems, and eco-subsea coating solutions.

Power is provided by four generator sets, producing 2,300kW each.

The basic design and production drawings for the construction were supplied by VARD Designs, of Norway. The vessel has flexible operational capabilities and is built to ClassNK classification society standards, meeting the regulatory requirements of the Japanese government.
