As well as building new headquarters for its cable business in Charlotte, North Carolina, Corning Inc is pressing ahead with construction of a $60 million plant in southeast Hickory to make cable for its optical communications division. The company, which employs over 4,000 employees in the state, has committed to creating 75 new jobs by the end of 2020, increasing that number to 110 by the end of 2023. Citing growing demand for optical fiber and cable, Corning was given the land and tax incentives as part of the build, with an option to acquire a further 4.4 acres. Full story on page 14. Heading a little further south, the Chilean telecommunications firm GTD is to install an undersea cable along 3,500km of Pacific coastline to improve connectivity with its operations in Colombia and Peru. The cable will be submerged 2,000m belowsea level.Chile is encouragingmajor techcompanies, such as Amazon and Google, to expand operations in the country.
