Planning for the future is more important than ever, and Amtrak achieved its goal of creating one of the most modern and sophisticated telecommunications systems available when it converted the National Guard building in Washington DC into its new headquarters. The 82,000ft 2 building includes a converged network capable of providing high bandwidth and wireless connectivity for the up to 500 users housed across four floors of office space. A fiber optic network was the obvious choice to achieve its requirements, so Amtrak and its consulting engineers selected passive optical LAN due to its affordability, reliability, long life and reduced power consumption. Turn to page 18 for more details. “In the pink” has a whole new meaning for Allied Wire and Cable (AWC), which switched to a sturdy, vibrant pink reel in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, starting 1 st October 2017. The pink reel, nicknamed “Betty”, is believed to be three times sturdier than its traditionally colored counterpart.
