The fiber opticmanufacturer AFL has received a 2018 excellence in corporate responsibility award, presented by the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance (SCMA). The award recognizes the positive contributions made to the local community by manufacturers. The three categories of the award are community involvement and philanthropy, environmental safety, and wellness and safety. Kurt Dallas, executive vice president of AFL, said: “Every year, we commit to being a good steward of our community, to support workforce development initiatives and to keep EHS a top priority. We are honored to receive this award, along with many other manufacturers in South Carolina, as it reaffirms these are the right focus areas that have measurable impact in the upstate and throughout the state.” AFL has an extensive community outreach program providing grants, sponsorships, volunteer projects, and disaster relief. Most notable of AFL’s achievements is its United Way campaign, making a $237,000 donation to the community (inclusive of associates’ donations and AFL’s match). More recently, AFL has launched its operational workforce program, working with high school students who gain manufacturing certificates and join AFL’s production workforce after graduation. AFL also partners with local community colleges to build apprentice programs, where trade students can gain classroom knowledge while working part-time to gain technical experience.
