More data, more centers
Google plans to invest almost $675 million in a new data center in Hamina, Finland. This will be in addition to its existing data center in the area, established in 2009. “The demand for Google services is growing daily, and we are building our data center infrastructure to match this demand,” said Antti Jarvinen, Google’s Finland country head. The new facility will sit within the existing data center campus in Hamina, the site of the most advanced data centers in Google’s portfolio. The facility uses seawater from the Bay of Finland as part of an advanced cooling system.
The news comes shortly after Google CEO Sundar Pichai outlined plans for a $13 billion investment in new data centers and offices across the US, with large scale expansions planned across 14 states. In May, Google Cloud expanded its presence into Osaka, Japan, to support a growing customer base. In a blog post, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said that the widespread adoption of Google’s technology solutions by retail, gaming, financial services andmanufacturingorganizations had influenced the decision.
