Cable laying improvements

Estonian contract

AS Merko Infra, part of the AS Merko Ehitus group, and AS Connecto Eesti have entered into a contract with Elering AS to replace three 110kV electric power lines in Tallinn, Estonia, with ground cables. The contract includes the replacement of a 110kV electric power line with ground cable between Kadaka and Veskimetsa substations in Tallinn. NKT’s cable laying vessel, NKT Victoria , has been fitted with a custom-made cable laying monitoring system. The system promotes safe installation of power cables with minimal risk of compromising the cable integrity, even in the most challenging site conditions such as high seas, strong current or low visibility. Claes Westerlind, executive vice president and head of HV Solutions Karlskrona, said: “The new system provides real-time monitoring and data collection during cable lay, ensuring optimal layback tension, departure angle and touchdown position without any physical contact with the cable. With the new system we are … minimizing the risk of over-bending or stretching the cable during installation. The system increases the level of digitalization and integration of the survey system, improving the cable laying performance and reliability.”
