New life for landmark facility

An industrial landmark, the Central Steel and Wire plant in Milwaukee, has been sold to a Michigan company. Alro Steel Corporation, a processor and distributor of metals and plastics, has bought the plant for $7.1 million. Alro already has a plant in Wauwatosa, but has been constrained by space at that location.

The newly purchased building covers 108,000ft 2 , compared with 85,600ft 2 at the Wauwatosa plant. The 62-year old Central Steel and Wire building was once widely admired for its design, and particularly for its long stretches of windows.
Bob Bates, a regional vice president with the firm, said: “Our facility’s too small now,
