African acquisition

Group deal

African telecoms and subsea connectivity provider Seacom has announced its acquisition of FibreCo to increase the company’s presence in Southern Africa. FibreCo owns and operates a nationwide dark fiber network in South Africa, and the acquisition will allow Seacom to boost its business and enterprise service offering in the region, and better position itself for the rollout of 5G services. “The acquisition enables the delivery of high speed Internet connectivity and cloud products into smaller cities and towns across the country, which have typically been under-serviced,” Seacom said in a press statement. “This acquisition represents another major milestone towards Seacom achieving its vision to expand its African footprint through the consolidation of fiber assets. Seacom believes this is necessary for the evolution of the market, particularly as we move into the 5G environment with its requirement for pervasive fiber networks,” the company said. Oman Cables has signed a contract with the Nama group to supply its group members across the Sultanate of Oman. A press release said that Oman Cables, which has long been a supporter of the Nama group, will supply a mix of 11 to 33 kV electrical cables. The deal was one of three signed by the group at the 2018 Energy and Water Conference, said to have a collective value of approximately $106 million. The contracts will run for three years, with the option of a two-year renewal. The company said, “For Oman Cables this represents an ongoing commitment to the local market in Oman, and signifies clearly the competitiveness, on a global scale, of locally based industries.” Nama group’s chairman, Hassan bin Mohammed al Lawatiaid, said the deal includes nine group companies that can purchase cables as needed to suit their purposes.
