More than seven million rural businesses and residential customers across the USA will benefit from a $1.6 billion investment from the US Department of Agriculture for rural electric utility infrastructure projects across 24 states. The projects will help build or improve 5,833 miles of line and include $307 million for smart grid technologies to improve system operations and monitor grid security. See page 9 for full details. Commercial Metals Company has bought four US rebar mills and 33 rebar fabrication locations from Gerdau Long Steel North America. The deal gives CMC additional annual rolling capacity of around 2.5 million tons. Full story on page 14.
