Ooredoo Maldives has begun its offshore marine survey in preparation for its nationwide fiber optic submarine cable project. Working with Huawei Marine Networks, the 100G transmission network will extend to 1,200km. Ooredoo plans to significantly boost Internet services in the Maldives and provide high speed fiber internet connectivity to all the islands across the nation. The marine surveys are being carried out by the exploration survey vessel MV Duke , which features a specialist survey laboratory for onboard data processing and interpretation. The survey will collect the data required for Huawei Marine to design a submarine cable system customized for the Maldives’ marine environment. CEO Vikram Sinha added that Ooredoo’s priority in the Maldives has always been the establishment of a modern network to provide the best telecommunication and Internet services to its islands and resorts. The operation to lay the submarine network across the archipelago should be underway by mid-2016.
