Safety comes, in any industry, first and foremost. So it is hardly surprising that Washington DC’s Metrorail was temporarily shut down for anemergency inspection followinga tunnel fire inMarch. An average of 700,000 trips a day are made on the system, which celebrated its 40 th birthday on 27 th March. A total of 600 jumper cables were inspected throughout the system, with repair crews replacing the aged cables with newer copper cables with better insulation. The full story can be found on page 11 in this issue of wiredInUSA. Another milestone has also been marked with cable assembly manufacturer Cicoil celebrating 60 years in the business. Established in 1956 as a provider of multi-conductor cables to the mainframe computer industry, the company was the originator of the flexible flat or ribbon cable. WireCo World Group is selling its wire rope manufacturing plant in St Joseph to Hillyard Industries, for development of a new manufacturing and national distribution center.
