the steel is replaced by a lightweight and flexible Kevlar ® strength member that has the same pull strength of steel. Unlike steel, the Kevlar strength member expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass members. Using Kevlar in place of steel also means the cable has virtually no memory, making the cable easier to pay off, lay flat and wind back up on the drum. For further durability, the HDC720HD utilizes bend-insensitive fiber elements with very low attenuation and a bend radius of 0.2mm, compared with 2mm for traditional single-mode fiber. The typical outer braid is replaced with two 18 AWG drain wires, and the HDC720HD’s master jacket is tough, glossy polyurethane. HDC720HD allows 300m of cable on a drum that would take only 200 meters of 9.2mm cable. Active optical cables Molex Incorporated has expanded its iPass TM connector and cable assembly solution with the introduction of its high density (HD) active optical cables (AOCs), capable of delivering 48Gbps data rates over four lanes of 12Gbps with reaches of up to 100m. The iPass HD AOCs complement the existing copper iPass+ HD connector and cable offerings and provide large-scale enterprise and data center storage system customers with a complete end-to-end solution. "Storage systems are becoming larger and more distributed due to the pervasive growth of new technologies that
provide on-demand entertainment and information, in-depth data analytics and increased information retention," said Brent Hatfield, product manager, Molex. "As a result, longer length cables are required that enable systems designers to build next-generation SAS 3.0, 12Gbps storage equipment. The newest addition to our iPass family provides nearly double the density of the current QSFP+ AOCs, making the HDAOCs ideal for larger scalemulti-rack designs." The HD AOCs feature a 3mm cable outer diameter, decreasing cable management and routing challenges by reducing bulk cable size and increasing flexibility. The smaller size also provides additional board space for systemdesigners to implement more I/O ports.
