❍ The site of Velleuer’s new building

Increasing volumes lead to expanded premises

Following years of increasing business volumes, Velleuer – a Lesjöfors company – has decided to expand its facilities with a new building. The larger space will provide room for automated processes and logistics. In 2018, Velleuer bought a property adjacent to its existing factory in Velbert, Germany, and the decision to build an extension followed in December 2020. In April 2021, the first excavator hit the ground and construction work could begin. The new facility will have the latest equipment for the manufacture of com-

plex stampings. The existing factory will continue with the manufacture of wire spring products. There will also be more space for value- added processes such as the assembly of strip components, and in-line washing. Frank Jahn, MD of Velleuer, commented, “By separating the production of stamp- ings from wire springs and forms we gain not only more space and a better workflow for our employees but also more streamlined logistics, which our customers will benefit from when it comes to an even higher service level.”

The new building will meet the latest requirements in terms of energy efficiency, which is a high-priority area in the Lesjöfors Group’s sustainability objectives. The newly gained space is necessary in order to cope with increased business volumes and the growing requirements of process automation. Velleuer plans to move into the new building by the end of 2021. Lesjöfors AB www.lesjoforsab.com Velleuer GmbH & Co KG www.velleuer.de

❍ The new Gearwrench multi-bit drivers

Fasten faster – versatile ratcheting multi-bit drivers with integrated bit storage

Gearwrench’s new ratcheting multi-bit drivers are available in two versions: a 19- in-1 option (80191R) with interchangeable S2 steel bits that cover the most common applications for everyday use, and a 6-in-1 stubby version (80061R) for better access in tight spots. “We heard professional technicians complain about other multi-bit drivers not having the right size options, being a pain to keep organised and causing real pain in their hands with poor handles,”

said Gearwrench product manager Jarrett Wolf. “Our new multi-bit drivers are designed to help users move quickly and comfortably while keeping the bits neatly organised right where they want them.” Both versions feature a full-metal high- torque ratchet mechanism that allows for faster driving. When a different size is needed, the end-cap storage keeps bits organised and easy to access.

High torque can put a strain on the user’s hands, but the Gearwrench ratcheting multi-bit drivers are made with an ergonomic dual-material tri-lobe handle for comfort in everyday usage. The handles are also oil and solvent resistant, making them suitable for automotive and industrial professionals looking to keep their tools clean and in good working order. Success for trampolines with balanced Swedish springs Lesjöfors customised tension springs have contributed to the success of North Trampoline’s Performer model. the company turned to Lesjöfors with a request for the development of a spring solution.

and there was an increasing demand for wedge anchors due to their benefits in ceilings and other applications. There was also growing awareness of the concrete screw and its faster installation time. By 2010, the use of the sleeve anchor was at around 70 per cent globally – a 20 per cent reduction compared to the previous decade. In the present day, innovation, technology and efficiency have led to an increase in popularity of the concrete screw, which provides a simpler method of installation by only needing to be screwed into a pre- drilled pilot hole. This reduces installation times while still providing good tension and shear values. The concrete screw is also suitable for “close to the edge” applications where the minimum edge distance is small and the screw will not produce excess expansion and pressure on the base material. The popularity of concrete screws is increasing in Europe, while the market is more mature in the USA, where brands such as Tapcon gave the screws a faster introduction. Overall, concrete screws account for approximately 20 per cent of the mechanical anchor market. Due to their efficiency and time-saving properties, Celo expects concrete screws to increase in popularity, and has developed a large range for all types of heavy-duty installation. They are supplied with ETA approval and are fire resistant. Celo Fixings www.celofixings.com When possible, the company uses Swedish subcontractors, such as Lesjöfors. Thomas Hagel, R&D manager at North Trampoline, commented, “The ease of having a partnership based on the same values as ours cannot be underestimated. “Competence, responsiveness and flex- ibility are factors that make us happy to recommend Lesjöfors to others.” Lesjöfors AB www.lesjoforsab.com

The company ships trampolines to 22 countries in Europe and has just started sales in the USA, with Australia to follow later this year. In the development process of the premium-class trampoline, North Trampoline put high demands on performance, quality and safety. The tension springs have a key function, and

“Lesjöfors has spring development in its DNA so once we were clear about the requirements of the springs, the journey to a well-balanced spring with high dynamics and a long lifespan was smooth,” said Henrik Berner, business develop- ment manager for Lesjöfors Sweden. North Trampoline develops its new trampolines in Sweden.

Mechanical anchors through the years While mechanical anchors have been in use for decades, the popularity of the dif- ferent types of anchor has changed. Celo, a family-owned company dedicated to the design and manufacturing of screws and fixings, has highlighted three different types of mechanical anchors, to compare their uses, advantages and popularity. concrete, as well as providing a suitable option in countries such as Chile and Japan, where seismic activity needs to be taken into account.

By the year 2010, other mechanical anchors – such as the wedge anchor – started to become popular, along with the use of chemical anchors. The wedge anchor provided a cheaper alternative to the sleeve anchor, due toway it is designed and behaves on installation. Unlike the sleeve anchor, the wedge anchor gets its hold from just a small area, with a short collar at the base of the anchor that opens as the anchor is tightened. It is this collar that makes it suitable for ceiling applications, as it can readjust in case of cracking from the pressure of weight. Wedge anchors are also typically thinner than sleeve anchors, reducing the time and effort needed when drilling a pilot hole. During this time, the rate of construction grew in places including the Middle East,

The sleeve anchor has always been the most popular form of mechanical anchor, providing a strong and reliable hold, and is commonly used for connecting structural and non-structural elements to concrete. The anchor has an expansion cone that expands the sleeve through its internal threading. As it is tightened it will expand against the base material, giving it a strong hold that distributes the load along the length of the embedment. The thicker width provides a higher shear resistance, making the anchors suitable for installations on walls. It is estimated that back in the year 2000, around 90 per cent of all fasteners in concrete were sleeve anchors. Their popularity was due to their versatility of being applied to cracked or non-cracked

Streamlining ground mount array installations IronRidge has further streamlined the process of designing and installingground mount arrays when using ground screws as the foundation method. In March, the company completed compatibility testing with Krinner’s G-Series ground screw and American Ground Screw’s Model-3, and now offers a certified systems engineering letter. Both ground screw options are now part of the UL2703 listing for IronRidge’s XR ground-based system. This ensures the attachment hardware (hex-head set screws) is added to the bill of materials, and the engineering letter is added to the downloadable zip file of certification letters and ground mount installation manuals. Ground screws are becoming a preferred foundation method for ground-based arrays. In a recent survey of IronRidge installers, ground screws were chosen over cement pilings by a ratio of 2:1. to streamline the design and install of ground mount systems delivers on that promise,” said IronRidge CEO Rich Tiu. “We have collaborated closely with two pre-eminent manufacturers of ground screws to make this possible. And we listened closely to our installers to deepen our understanding of their processes. The result is a combination of hardware, software and engineering that saves installers time and money.” IronRidge www.ironridge.com As well as allowing faster installation because there is no need to wait for

Additionally, IronRidge manufactures custom attachment hardware that is required to connect the sub-structure to the ground screws. These hex-head set screws provide corrosion protection and a thread-locking coating to ensure fasteners do not loosen over time. IronRidge has designed and tested the set screw for use with both Krinner and American Ground Screw products, to meet the load requirements placed on the system. The company has also added the option to select ground screws in the Ground Mount Design Assistant online platform.

Whitepaper addresses issue of welding vs fastening

While welding is a proven and some- times preferred method of fabricating steel-to-steel connections, fasteners offer advantages in many applications, includ- ing time, cost, labour savings and safety. When evaluating whether welding or fastening is better suited for a particular installation, a variety of project factors should be considered. In the final analysis, the type of joint to be specified and fabricated depends on materials, coatings, load factors and more, as well as operational preferences. All-Pro Fasteners has published a new whitepaper, Fastening vs Welding: Fabricating Better Joints, which addresses these factors in detail. Subjects discussed in the whitepaper include the weldability of the materials to be fastened (including surface coatings that may be affected by heat), joint types, installation processes, logistics, in- spection requirements, cost, labour avail- ability, accessibility, environmental con- ditions, safety, and future maintenance considerations.

All-Pro Fasteners is offering a free down- load of the whitepaper, which includes an overview of welding and of fastening processes, project factors to consider, and a comparison of both joining methods. An introduction to the Lindapter® advanced clamping system is also included, describing how the system can deliver high-strength joints in the field by quickly clamping two steel sections using only hand-tightening tools. Fabricating Better Joints is the second whitepaper in our Fastener Facts series, which we are developing to provide in-depth information concerning fastening and related joining processes,” said Todd Grzych, director of marketing and communications at All-Pro Fasteners. “Our initial Fastener Facts whitepaper, Fastener Corrosion: Avoiding Problems in Advance, provides an overview of the leading causes of corrosion, along with strategies for minimising or avoiding corrosion through the selection of fastener materials, designs and coatings.” “Fastening vs Welding:
