Stainless steel fastener solution for catamaran rudder

Bumax 109 screws are used on the rudders of A-Cat catamarans

The Bumax 109 is used for water jets, subsea equipment, pumps, valves, wind turbines,

Swiss ship builder Scheurer Bootswerft AG has opted for screws from Swedish specialist fastener maker Bumax to fix its high-performance catamaran rudders, where standard fasteners would fail. High-strength Bumax 109 screws are being used to fasten the A-Cat cata- maran rudders constructed by Scheurer Bootswerft. An A-Cat catamaran has two rudders, and in this application, each is secured with two Bumax 109 screws. The fasteners offer high corrosion resistance and strength in demanding applications. They have a high molyb- denum content, which Bumax claims makes them the strongest A4 fastener on the market when coupled with its manufacturing processes and sourcing of high quality European raw material.

screws can cope with this high tension to keep the rudder at the correct angle while maintaining corrosion resistance in salt water environments.” Scheurer Bootswerft has also found that Bumax fasteners can cope with sudden impacts, for example when the rudder hits debris in the water. “The screws fastening the rudder are a simple but essential part of the catamaran as their failure can be the difference between winning or losing a race,” said Mr Steinmann. high-pressure equipment, nuclear plants, submarines, particle accelerators and other demanding applications. The manu- facturer says that the screws provide greater safety and will last longer than standard fasteners. Aron Steinmann, CEO at Scheurer Bootswerft, commented, “We originally used standard stainless steel A4 screws to fasten the rudders, but as the rudders come under very high tension when turning through the water at speed, we found that these screws were bending and eventually breaking. Even a small bend in these fasteners can alter the angle of the rudder, which reduces performance. Importantly, the high-strength Bumax

Roller screw market to expand at 5.7 per cent Global roller screw sales were valued at $233.4mn in 2020, with balanced long term projections, according to Persistence Market Research. The company’s report estimates the market to expand at 5.7 per cent CAGR from 2021 to 2031. Demand for roller screws reduced in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the market is set to recover in 2022 and onwards.

Rapid growth and improving prosperity imply that energy demand is increasing, stemming from developing economies, particularly within Asia, rather than traditional markets in the OECD. Robots are utilised in automotive production throughout the world, such as those used for the spot welding of stamped sheet metal parts. Electric actuators are replacing pneumatic and hydraulic versions, as they are more

There is growing need from the auto- motive industry for planetary roller screws due to enhancement in the efficiency of applications such as vehicle control sub systems. Roller screw actuators are robust, and can withstand greater shock load; they are also used when a designer or user is seek ing an alternative to pneumatic actuators.

75 years of fastening technology Fabory is celebrating its 75 th anniversary as a specialist in fastening solutions. In 1947, Karel Borstlap and his father started selling screws and tools from the parental home in The Hague in the Netherlands, where the stock was literally stored under the stairs. The company moved premises to Scheveningen, then again to Tilburg. In 1996, Fabory (then still Borstlap BV) started using the automated miniload in the central warehouse in Tilburg, making the company one of the first whole- salers to invest in a computer-controlled warehouse. Two years later, the Borstlap laboratory received A2LA accreditation and was recognised as an independent lab- oratory with the right to issue product certificates. MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions (MFCS), a supplier of original equip ment automotive components, has launched the Threadstrong brand and accompanying ecommerce website, www.threadstrong.us “It’s always been frustrating to us to see the aftermarket flooded with inferior, low quality and potentially dangerous replacement wheel fasteners of unknown origin, so we decided to do something about it,” said Brad Southwood, MFCS vice president of sales and marketing.” Rob Whitney, president of the MFCS fastener division added, “No team is more knowledgeable about how to engineer and manufacture safe and durable wheel fasteners than the MacLean-Fogg team. Swedish specialist fastener maker Bumax has supplied premium stainless steel fasteners to a pilot hydropower project in France, verifying that the fasteners suffered no corrosion, wear or galling after two years of operation in extreme conditions. The Bumax premium stainless steel fastener solution was verified by the two year pilot project, which contributed to the development of the next-generation tidal turbine. “This is extremely encouraging for the future of sustainable renewable energy solutions since wear and tear and maintenance are major challenges for power plants in extreme conditions like choppy and salty waters with strong currents,” said Lars Holm, managing director of Bumax. “Europe also needs to develop new sources of reliable renewable energy, which this project will lead to.” Bumax 88 fasteners were used on the 1 MW HydroQuest tidal turbine installed off the coast of Brittany in northwest France. After more than two years of operation at the Paimpol-Bréhat site at 30m depth, the turbine fasteners showed no traces of corrosion or galling. Tests of the mechanical properties (both strength and ductility) of the bolts conducted by Bumax after the pilot project showed that they had maintained their properties. Raphaël Coquet, project director at HydroQuest, said, “No issues were found related to bolting during this project, and our team didn’t have any issues with galling during disassembly. These lessons give us positive learnings for the long term deployments, and we are confident to manufacture our future turbines with Bumax bolts.” Cable glands and cable clamps Berardi Fasteners has begun a partnership with a German producer of cable glands. marine applications that require durable and maintenance-free fastener solutions. The tidal turbine prototype was designed by HydroQuest, a French turbine technology developer of vertical axis turbines. The Paimpol-Bréhat site is owned and operated by the energy company EDF. The project partners wanted a maintenance-free fastener solution for tidal turbines to minimise operation costs

Stand-up fastening innovation Camo has introduced the next generation of stand-up fastening with the ClipDrive™. Designed for fastening Camo Universal Deck Clips, the ergonomic, lightweight tool attaches to any drill and allows the user to stand comfortably while fastening any type of grooved deck board.

“We’ve been working closely with contractors to get a deep understanding of their everyday job-site challenges,” said Doug Hutchings, vice president of product development at National Nail. “Building on existing Camo innovation, the Camo ClipDrive answers the call for a better way to install grooved deck boards.” The ClipDrive features a height-adjustable handle and weighted nose, so the tool can be quickly swung from joist to joist and the exposed screw head easily targeted.
