Wire & Cable ASIA – September/October 2020

Full steam ahead for China It goes without saying that the health and safety of exhibitors and visitors alike is of paramount importance as wire China gets underway on 23 September. The organisers have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure this, including the staging of a new ‘offline + online’ model. This allows people to connect online, build trust and then finalise the deal offline. This kind of new exhibition model can not only increase traffic to the exhibition, but also create effective business connections between exhibitors and buyers. It is also the time and place to show the strength of the industry, as new technology and innovations give business the ideal platform to move forward. The interest in the exhibition – with some 600 companies scheduled to attend – shows a commitment to the future as businesses from Germany, France, Italy, Korea, Taiwan and Japan will be on the exhibition floor. The staging of the exhibition will allow the strengthening of existing business relationships, something which is increasingly important as companies recover from the turmoil of the last nine months.

Our coverage of wire China starts on page 36. Also on the Asian market, UK-based Cimteq has joined forces in a strategic partnership with Toho International to launch its CableBuilder cable design solution into the Japanese market. Full story on page 12.

Sikora “on tour”

HILGER Groß, Sikora’s business development and area sales manager for plastics, is visiting customers at different locations in Germany and neighbouring countries with the Sikora mobile, and inviting them to test plastic pellets with the Purity Concept V. “The focus of our roadshow is to make the inspection and analysis system tangible,” said Mr Groß. “Customers can experience the performance of the Purity Concept V live on their own premises. Especially in the current situation, it is received very well by our customers when I arrive with the Sikora mobile and present the system, naturally always in compliance with the valid hygiene and distancing regulations.” The Purity Concept V is an automated light table used for optical sample testing, quality control and analysis of plastic pellets. The material sample is placed on a sample tray and moved through the inspection area. Within seconds, the material is inspected automatically by a colour camera, and a projector marks the contaminated material directly on the sample tray. The Purity Concept V detects all optical contamination, such as black specks, colour deviations or blendings, from a size of 50µm on the surface of transparent, translucent and coloured material. With the software PurityLab-Professional,

the operator receives images of all contamination, detailed statistics about size and frequency of the detected contamination, and sorting by size categories. A clear allocation of the contamination and follow-up inspection are possible at any time. Messe Düsseldorf’s Werner M Dornscheidt retires After almost 17 years as president and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf – and serving the company for around 37 years – Werner M Dornscheidt resigned from his office at the end of June. “Trade fairs are my life,” said the outgoing CEO. “What we have built up together with my team over all those years benefits the company today. “While conditions are difficult at present, it is comforting to know that ‘my’ company is in good hands. The team is already busy working on a restart and developing further digital add-ons so that Messe Düsseldorf will also remain the successful, reputable company in future that it is today. I have made my contribution.” The strategic reorientation of the company spearheaded by Mr Dornscheidt contributed to international growth. Düsseldorf’s four No 1 trade fairs with the highest number of events organised abroad were grouped into global portfolios: Processing & Packaging (interpack); Plastics & Rubber (encompassing the plastic trade fair ‘K’); Health & Medical Technologies (including medical technology trade fair MEDICA); and Metals & Flow Technologies – with the cable, wire and tube trade fairs wire and Tube. On site, Mr Dornscheidt focused on the development of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre, in terms of technical facilities, functionality, convenience and architecture. After the commissioning of Hall 1 in 2019, this year will see the completion of the new South Entrance, with a 20m-high cantilevered roof measuring 7,800m 2 . “In time for rebooting trade fair operations in autumn, Messe Düsseldorf will have a new architectural highlight in the offing,” said a delighted Mr Dornscheidt. Up until lockdown in March, the adjacent Hall 1 had been fully booked from the outset. Wolfram N Diener succeeds Mr Dornscheidt as CEO. Mr Diener has served Messe Düsseldorf as managing director operative business since 2018, and took over as CEO on 1 July. “I am delighted at the trust placed in me. We can perfectly build on Werner Dornscheidt’s achievements and jointly rise to the challenges ahead,” said Mr Diener. “Here in Düsseldorf we boast an inimitable brand profile that can be made even more successful through the drivers that are internationalisation and digitalisation; and what’s just as important: a powerful team.” Erhard Wienkamp (managing director of fair management) and Bernhard J Stempfle (managing director finance and technical operations, digital strategy and communication) will complete the board of managing directors. Wire manufacturer helps with ventilator production

Mark Venables, managing director of Alloy Wire. “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought this sharply into view and ... we have been busy manufacturing a range of wire for companies that are playing a crucial role in supporting the frontline.” The company supplied wire to a customer who had to remake springs destined for ventilator production due to an untimely power cut, while another client made a 280-mile round trip to collect an order. AWI manufactures round, flat and profile wire, with its range featuring a number of medically suitable materials including Phynox, MP35N, stainless 316LVM, nickel 200 and 201 and Inconel. The company’s staff worked around the clock to meet the requirements of existing and new customers, with material available from 0.025 to 21mm (0.001" to 0.827") in small batches or medium/large volumes. In addition to the projects for ventilator production, AWI provided wire for electric heating elements used for medical plastic forming and for the critical sterilisation of vital equipment. Alloy Wire International www.alloywire.com

WIRE manufactured in the UK’s West Midlands is helping support the country’s unprecedented drive to build more medical ventilators. Alloy Wire International (AWI) was commissioned to produce more than 5 km of material to be used in the production of crucial parts for use in life-saving equipment destined for the Nightingale Hospital in London. The company, which holds more than 200 tonnes of EU/DFARS-compliant stock, put its Emergency Manufacturing Service (EMS) into action to meet the urgent requirements of a spring maker that was supplying into the VentilatorChallengeUK Consortium to assist in the ramp-up of Smiths and Penlon Rapidly Manufactured Ventilator Systems. ❍ The versatile Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winder

Fully automatic rewinding lines

To add to the flexibility, the spool supply magazine can handle different types of spools, such as wire baskets, plastic and fibre spools without any adjustment. In response to customer demand, the Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winder is also available for smaller 5 kg spools. To ease the production process for their customers, the Lämneå Bruk team developed a packaging robot for the Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winder. A robot checks the total weight of the finished spools that the machine has spooled thoroughly. If there are any discrepancies, the robot will put the spool aside to be double-checked by the staff, and continue with the next spool for an uninterrupted process. If everything is in accordance with the quality standards, the automatic packaging robot moves the finished spools onto pallets, labels them and packages the spools for shipping.

RELIABLE, fast and precise wire-laying technology has been a major focus of Swedish wire machinery manufacturer Lämneå Bruk AB in recent years. According to president Jonas Hagstedt, all Lämneå Bruk machine concepts are individual and designed according to the customer’s specific requirements. Lämneå Bruk offers a range of rewinding lines, from semi-automatic for SAW wire to heavy machinery that can handle spools of up to 100 kg; one of the company’s flagships is the Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winder. Now in its second generation, the Fully Automatic Precision Layer Winder combines speed, precise wire laying to 0.01mm, user friendliness and high safety standards. The spools are changed fully automatically, with servo-drive motor-operated tooling for continuous production at top speeds of 35m/sec. For a smooth and efficient process, the fastening of the finishing end is also made by servomotors. The servomotor brand is customisable, so customers can choose between Siemens, Lenze and Allen Bradley.

THE Niehoff Package System (NPS) is an efficient and safe handling system for automotive wires, and consists of SV type spoolers and collapsible NPS plastic multi-way spools. The spoolers are designed to operate in line with extrusion lines, to spool the insulated wire coming from the line with a particular conical wire-laying technology onto the NPS spools. The spools offer a secure, stable and tangle-free package, both when full and partially empty, and enable high cable payoff speeds into downstream processes. Even signal cables made of copper alloys with a cross-section of 0.13mm 2 can be processed without problems.

Empty NPS spools can be fully dismantled and nested into each other. Dismantled spools take up only a third of the space of comparable conventional spools and so require less return shipping space. Upon return to the cable manufacturer, NPS spools can be easily and quickly reassembled and re-used for dozens of cycles. Nine types of NPS spool are offered, covering the size range 600/400 to 400/100, with the first figure indicating the flange diameter in mm and the second one showing the traverse height in mm. The 400/400 to 400/100 spools are also offered in a PP version. They ❍ The NPS 400/400 spool made of PP has a flange diameter of 400mm and traverse height of 400mm

High dynamic turning with FreeTurn tooling

IN September 2019, Ceratizit launched the first standard range of products for its High Dynamic Turning with FreeTurn process. The tool manufacturer has taken the next step, being joined by machine tool and control system manufacturers as well as providers of CAD/CAM systems. The new turning technology, combined with the company’s dynamic FreeTurn tooling, means that it is now possible to carry out traditional turning operations such as roughing, finishing, contour turning, face turning and longitudinal turning with just one tool. Despite new cutting materials, chip breakers and tooling systems being invented to optimise turning, the basic turning process itself has remained essentially unchanged for many years: a contour is created with an indexable insert at a fixed angle to the workpiece. This method has not changed, even with the addition of controllable axes in modern turning-milling centres. Ceratizit has taken advantage of the features of these turning-milling centres and developed the High Dynamic Turning system (HDT). The tool approach and point of contact in the machine can be varied, as opposed to conventional turning with a fixed tool.

❍ One indexable insert with several cutting edges

The milling spindle is used to produce the corresponding approach angle to the workpiece. The use of the spindle drive in conjunction with the slim, axial tool design of the FreeTurn tools creates 360° of freedom without the risk of collision. Due to the rotation around its own tool axis, the cutting edge change can be done without interrupting the cutting process. The angle of approach is freely variable at any time and can even be changed while cutting. Ceratizit SA www.ceratizit.com Ceratizit USA, Inc www.ceratizit.com

Payoff for fibre optic cable production

MAILLEFER’S new PM 265 high- speed motor-driven fibre payoff is designed for a wide variety of fibre optic secondary coating lines. The six-reel position frames can combine into several configurations to handle a total of up to 24 fibres. Fibre tension is accurately controlled with pneumatic dancers. By default, the reels are kept behind doors to improve operator safety. A quick set-up feature shortens set-up times by a claimed 70 per cent when splitting the fibre count. The payoffs operate on either the upper or the lower section at any one time. While one section is running, the other section is in preparation for the next run. The payoff is built on a compact frame layout for a reduced machine footprint, and accepts standard 50 km fibre reels. Maillefer Extrusion Oy www.maillefer.net

Polypropylene power insulation

that the polypropylene compound cable can have better current-carrying capacity and transmission capacity, and lower electrical losses at 90°C, and that the cable can also be run at 110°C, if necessary. This was also the case in auxiliary tests when a similar MV XLPE cable was compared to an MV PPC cable. Rosendahl extensively tested RoSET MV PPC in its laboratory and also with complete production runs on an installed line. Over the past 18 months the company has had a dedicated extrusion setting for the RoSET insulation system compounds with high and stable performance. During the real cable runs, it also found that it had to advise cable producers to take care of cross contamination when changing from one material to another, and to be particularly careful when handling the materials in general. On this basis, a special material-handling system has been developed. Rosendahl recommends a dedicated horizontal MV PPC insulation line to avoid problems and to ensure successful test and production runs.

electrical properties and higher operating temperature. Rosendahl conducted both internal and test institute tests, which revealed the electrical performance at both the AC breakdown and impulse tests. The successfully passed full electrical type test also showed low loss factor (tan delta) values, even when compared to the reference peroxide XLPE grade. The new RoSET insulation system is tailored to MV cable production, and should therefore be compared to similar kinds of grades. Quite often these are water-tree retardant XLPE compounds with

RoSET is the name of Rosendahl’s next-generation power cable insulation technology for MV cable production with polypropylene-based compounds. A number of cable makers, along with major utilities worldwide, are already producing and testing polypro- pylene-based insulation systems (PPC) for MV and HV applications, both in AC and DC. PPC systems are characterised by a lower carbon footprint, no need for degassing and no by-products, as well as being recyclable, and having equal or better

different properties to HV/ EHV XLPE grades. The thermal conductivity of pure polypropylene is lower than that of polyethylene. With polypropylene copolymers, however, the difference is not as great. Together with development partner HV Cable Solutions, Rosendahl carried out ampacity calculations with different XLPE and PPC grades for a single 20 kV cable. The results showed
