A sharper picture In photography, fast-moving subjects must be captured with a short exposure time if the image is to succeed. Exposure times that are too long result in undesirable blurring.

With short exposure times, the Laser Series 2000 records each measured value with high image sharpness

Measuring methods with long exposure times result in blurring of the image

For the technology used to measure diameters during cable production, a short exposure time is decisive for accuracy and ultimately for the quality of the manufactured cable. Gauge heads from Sikora’s Laser Series 2000 precisely measure the diameter and ovality of conductors, wires, cables and other products without contact. The devices are based on measuring the diameter using diffraction analysis, together with a pulse controlled laser diode with an extremely short exposure time of 0.25 µs.

Alternative measuring methods with long exposure times can result in considerable blurring of the shadow image in the case of vibrating products. This leads to inaccurate measurement results with deviations that cannot be completely compensated for, even by the formation of average values. Sikora AG www.sikora.net

Digital texturing sets standard for PCR

This combination provides continually precise measure- ments, even in the presence of production-related vibration or rotating oscillation of the sample. Each of the 500 measured values per second is recorded in the three-dimensional measuring field with full image sharpness, ensuring measuring accuracy.

Tenova, a developer and provider of solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, has taken a further step to reinforce its commitment to a more sustainable industry. Group company Pomini Tenova, which specialises in the production of roll grinders and fully automated roll shops, has defined the product category rules (PCR) to standardise the life cycle assessment (LCA) of metal finishing machines. In 2021, the Pomini Digital Texturing™ (PDT™) system – a technology for roll texturing – received EPD® certification (Environmental Product Declarations), as a positive result of the auditing for its life cycle assessment analysis.

Following the experience gained through the LCA activity, the company led the definition of the PCR – the rules, requirements and guidelines to develop a high-quality EPD for a specific product category – ensuring that functionally similar products are assessed and compared in the same way when conducting the LCA. “The PDT is a disruptive technology in terms of innovation and environmental sustainability, unique in our sector,” said Paolo Gaboardi, Tenova executive vice president. “Therefore, we wanted to substantiate its advantages through the most stringent analysis and certification of environmental impact. “This approach was very much appreciated by the numerous customers who have chosen our technology, and we are now extending this experience to other products, focusing especially on the so-called downstream phase, ie measuring the impact deriving from the use of the machines over the years at customers’ sites.” Tenova SpA www.tenova.com
