The platforms for industry The successful staging of wire and Tube China in Shanghai, in September, along with the Guangzhou Metal and Metallurgy Exhibition the same week, has provided much-needed relief to the industries, economies and businesses still reeling from the impact of COVID-19. This good news has been added to with the announcement that wire Düsseldorf, from 7 to 11 December, is now going ahead after The Fairgrounds staged another exhibition during the first week of September. Inevitably there will be changes affecting exhibitors and visitors alike, but the European industry associations have joined forces in backing our industry’s most prestigious and largest event as companies strive to return to what, without doubt, will be a new ‘normal’. In backing the staging of the exhibition, IWCEA president Ralf Kappertz said: “Our industry is synonymous with innovation, sustainability and a long-term orientation. We will now be doing our utmost to also make this wire and Tube...what they have always been: the communication and business platforms of the wire, cable and tube industries.” “The industries need their most relevant sectoral platforms in order to present innovations and meet their business partners again,” confirmed Ferruccio Bellina, president of the Italian industry association ACIMAF.

❍ ❍ Cimteq’s cable design software integrates with Aesa Cortaillod’s quality management tools

New prototype launched by strategic partnership

Cable industry expert Cimteq and strategic partner Aesa Cortaillod have announced the launch of a new prototype that integrates Cimteq’s CableBuilder cable design software with Aesa Cortaillod’s quality management software, CIQ. The two companies, with sixty years of cable industry knowledge, have been working together to develop the prototype. Aesa Cortaillod provides measuring systems, devices and quality- performance services from its factories in Switzerland, Germany and China. UK-based Cimteq produces cable design and manufacturing software. The companies identified that a partnership could develop benefits for customers on both sides through increased profitability, improved quality and savings in materials.

Cimteq Shehab commented, “By seamlessly inter- connecting CableBuilder and CIQ through a single and universal interface, it is possible to simplify the overall handling of large design and production data pools. The power of CableBuilder, with its bespoke management of all cable manu- facturing product and process data, provides a one-stop shop for controlled delivery and transfer of test plans to the shop floor, connecting directly with the test devices.” Director Amanda Shehab added, “In future, we also plan to integrate our CableMES with AESA’s CIQ, as it provides a highly sophisticated analysis tool. It is vital that CableMES knows the quality status of every piece of material, finished and semi-finished product on the shop floor. This can be done through CableMES’s own quality president Ali

module, or through a third-party system like CIQ. The benefits of integrating with CIQ is that we would then have direct integration to AESA’s own measurements equipment too.” Aesa Cortaillod’s CEO, Vincent Arbet- Engels, PhD, said, “The CIQ quality management system supports traceability features as well as extended quality improvement and data management capabilities. In very real terms, it opens a window on to the shop floor by tracking process and test data, not to mention production history. Its integration with CableBuilder will have significant benefits for our clients; not least that automatically pulling data from CableBuilder will mean a lot less data to set up inside CIQ.” Cimteq Ltd www.cimteq.com

Rautomead Ltd At wire 2020 Rautomead will be presenting its new model RS 3000SX continuous casting machine for the manufacture of extra-low oxygen content CuOF rod. The company’s standard graphite furnace technology will produce low oxygen CuOFE (<5ppm) copper rod, which is suitable for most oxygen-free wire applications. Technical requirements from the automotive industry are driving demands for lower oxygen content copper rod, eg for use in the manufacture of high-efficiency bar- wound electric motors. The enhanced graphite crucible electric resistance Lapp is continuing the strategic expan- sion of its sales network. The demand for connection solutions from Lapp is constantly growing: in some regions of Africa, the company was able to achieve up to 50 per cent turnover growth in the last financial year. The demand is particularly high for automation, the food industry and the energy sector with the expansion of power grids and the use of renewable energies such as wind and solar energy. It is predicted that the African market will be among the world’s fastest growing in just a few years. With its 54 countries, a wealth of raw materials deposits and around 1.3bn inhabit- ants, Africa offers great potential. In some countries, growth rates (GDP) of between six and ten per cent were achieved in 2018. “For us, Africa is a sleeping giant,” said Andreas Lapp, chairman of the board of Lapp Holding AG. “We see great opportunities for growth in the long term.” German companies are still under- represented in Africa, especially small and medium-sized companies. For this reason, Lapp views the African Continental Free Trade Agreement establishing an African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) positively. The agreement was signed by 52 African member states and is intended to create predictable framework conditions for trade and investment by German companies.

Industry news Windak opens process and training centre in USA

Cable packaging machinery specialist Windak Inc has moved into its new 20,000ft 2 process and training centre in Conover, North Carolina, USA. Commenting on the move, Windak managing director Daniel Shelander said, “At the new facility we will focus on process development and customer training. To successfully provide turnkey solutions we need to engage with our customers on all levels, prior to the delivery of the equipment.” Since implementing local process and customer training, the commissioning and on-site training time have been significantly reduced. Enkotec has introduced the next generation Enkoroll – its fastest and most reliable thread rolling machine for the wire nails industry. The Enkoroll TR01, being launched in Q4 2020, has been designed to ensure that the production speed of thread rolling does not cause a bottleneck, whether in an inline or batch mode set-up. Offering an output speed of up to 3,000 nails per minute, the Enkoroll is also claimed to be equal to superior quality and consistently threaded wire nails, thanks to a highly rigid structure. With a perfectly engineered mechanical set-up and insertion mechanism, the Enkoroll enables fast and easy conversion from ring to Fuhr has developed an inline profiling system that allows manufacturers of enamelled wire to meet the high requirements of the automotive industry. The IPU320 combines rolling and profile drawing processes, so large width-to-thickness ratios can be achieved by driven rollers. One of the most important requirements during development was uninterrupted operation for months. The IPU320 is equipped with a closed control system that does not require an electrical interface to the paint spray line. The required space is kept to a minimal size of two metres; retrofitting in paint spray lines is usually possible without having to adapt the existing system. An intuitive interface for control and set-up facilitates the easy operation of the machinery and provides quick access to the features. The methodology of the development of Enkoroll with Enkosmart was to create a product that combines speed, flexibility, easy operation and quality output, merged into a digital framework to ensure maximum productivity for nail manufacturers. Enkotec A/S www.enkotec.com Due to the small layer thickness, the first calibration nozzle is only a few micrometres larger than the bare wire. If the wire does not have the correct dimensions, enamel coating might be either too thin or too thick, and insulation faults occur, which then lead to failure of the winding during operation. Another reason not to use profile drawing dies is the low degree of standardisation in transformer construction. lacquer bath and a calibration nozzle, spare lacquer is stripped off.

The automotive industry’s entry into electric mobility has created new challenges for manufacturers of enamelled wire. While round wires are usually used, in large transformers (eg in power stations), enamel-insulated rectangular wires are preferred because they improve power density and efficiency. The enamel insulation is very thin, with a layer thickness of 50 to 150 μm. The lacquer is applied in ten to 20 layers, so an individual layer might be just 5 μm. As the bare wire passes a

Kieselstein launches new service enquiry tool Customers of German wire machine producer Kieselstein can use a new service tool for placing their enquiries. The company recognised a problem with the existing process. A mainte- nance person who identifies a need for spare parts, for example, might not have the opportunity to send the enquiry, and might have to address the request to a purchasing department. The requirements would have to be specified, and technical documents placed at the purchaser’s disposal, for forwarding by email to the supplier. Kieselstein intends to facilitate this often-laborious process with a tool provided on its spare parts website. The customer can choose either a request for spare parts or services, or to address an individual request to Kieselstein, and then has the option to upload pictures or files containing details about the enquiry, or to add contact details directly from the mobile device being used. This can be done directly at the machine. Pictures of the machine label and the required spare part can be

added, as well as a photo of the business card, before the enquiry is sent to Kieselstein. The company will also distribute stickers that can be attached to the plant, to display a QR code that leads directly to the service enquiry portal. Kieselstein is able to process enquiries not only for their own plants, but also for plants of other drawing machine brands. Kieselstein International GmbH www.kieselstein.com

❍ ❍ Stranding machine

Planetary strander upgrade Leoni elocab GmbH in Georgensgmünd, Germany, in cooperation with Baremo, Switzerland, recently required an upgrade of a planetary strander with variable reverse rotation. As a part of the upgrade project, an RTM X42 telemetry system for continuous wire tension measurement and control was installed on the machine. The basic module measures the tension of up to 42 individual wires. The control centre monitors limit values, recipe management and quality protocols, and the brake control provides continuous, fully automatic wire tension.

The machine is an 18-spool Niehaus planetary strander with two cages of six and 12 payoffs each. Leoni elocab had previously updated various areas of the machine, and in particular equipped it with a modern control system. The machine is used for the production of highly flexible special cables – some in small production lots (from 100m in length). Klaus Falkenberg, a process engineer at Leoni elocab GmbH, commented, “The project went to our entire satisfaction ... the cooperation with Baremo as well as FMS was target-oriented and professional. We are very satisfied with the results and the set goals of the project have been achieved.”

The project increased plant productivity and process reliability through continuous production without manual intervention in the control of the strand tension. It also provided efficient measuring and control for very small wire tensions in the range from 2N to 20N, with recipe management for reduced set-up times. Measurement data is captured for quality control, and machine safety is increased by monitoring the locks on all cradles. FMS Force Measuring Systems AG www.fms-ag.ch

Cable taping and high-speed braiding

❍ ❍ Copper-clad aluminium magnesium wire

Zhejiang Superlink Group, established in 1990 and located in Hangzhou, China, develops and manufactures cable materials and machines for aluminium magnesium alloy wire, aluminium foil Mylar tape, PET, CCS, CCAM/CCA, PVC compounds, HDPE/ LDPE compounds and PVC wrappers, as well as high-speed braiding machines, rewinding machines and physics foam extruders. The aluminium magnesium alloy wire is bright and unstained, providing acid and alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength and toughness, without easy deformation under high temperature (120°C). For the aluminium foil Mylar tape, the raw material of aluminium polyester tape is soft aluminium foil and a polyester film, compounded with intaglio coating, slitting and rolling. Polyester tape is slit film that wraps and binds conductors, separating them from cable fillers. This product is composite with the aluminium film and becomes the cable film. Copper-clad steel (CCS) wire uses cladding or plating to form copper around the steel coil, to create atom bonds between the two metals. It can be processed like a single metal – when pulling out, annealing, and drawing the copper, the steel proportion to the diameter changes, but the copper layer remains the same. The high- frequency signal causes a “hasten skin effect” characteristic, so for copper- clad steel wire in high-frequency

signal transmission (more than 5 MHz), the conductivity is the same as pure copper wire. Copper-clad aluminium magnesium (CCAM) wire uses an advanced welding and copper plating process in production. The copper layer uses 99.9 per cent purity copper with high density and better conductivity. Superlink’s metallurgical bonding technique ensures that the copper cladding is evenly distributed around the aluminium magnesium coil along the wire, for better concentricity. PVC compounds for wires and cables, based on PVC resin, are made into granules by mixing, plasticisation and granulation, adding plasticiser, stabilising agent, pigments, etc. HDPE/LDPE compounds are synthesised under low pressure, for a mainly linear molecular structure with little branching. With a high degree of crystallisation and high density, they can withstand high temperatures, and have good rigidity, mechanical strength and resistance to chemical corrosion. The company’s high-speed braiding machine adopts frequency conversion technology, with a programmable logic controller and touchscreen. Features include stepless speed adjustment, controllable tension adjustment and auto-lubrication, with timing and comprehensive fault protection.
