Sleeping well with £1.8m investment ❍ Wire rod being manufactured in Scunthorpe, UK

“The investment in this new wire drawing facility is part of our wider business strategy to become world leaders in sustainable mattress and comfort innovation.” As well as producing wire for springs used in mattresses manufactured at Harrison Spinks’ factory in Leeds, the ultra-fine wire drawn in Scunthorpe will be exported, so lightweight springs can be used in mattresses in countries around the world. Richards Sims, British Steel managing director wire rod, said: “Quality and innovation are cornerstones of both companies’ products so we’re delighted to strengthen our partnership with Harrison Spinks.” British Steel – UK Website : www.britishsteel.co.uk

bed maker installs a further six wire drawing lines at the facility. These will produce approximately 400 tonnes of fine wire for its springs each week. Speaking about the new facility, Richard Essery, managing director of Harrison Spinks Components, said: “We have a long-established relationship with British Steel – the manufacturer provides the high-quality wire needed for our innovative spring technology. “Partnering with British Steel to launch our new wire drawing facility in Scunthorpe not only means we can recycle all steel waste, creating a closed-loop production process, but also allows us to develop a higher grade wire quality, enabling us to produce industry-leading springs for our mattresses.

UK-BASED luxury bed maker Harrison Spinks has demonstrated its commitment to British manufacturing by investing £1.8 million in a new wire drawing facility on British Steel’s site in Scunthorpe, which will lead to 22 new jobs. Harrison Spinks already employs more than 600 people at its facilities in Leeds. The bed maker – founded in 1840 – will utilise a 40,000ft 2 British Steel building to house two wire drawing lines, which were installed at the end of April 2018. These lines will draw the ultra-fine wire used to manufacture Harrison Spinks’ pocket springs, using steel rod from British Steel. The investment will initially create nine jobs with 13 more to follow when the

International Steels expands HICON/H 2 capacity for steel strip coils

annealing

IN March 2017, International Steels Ltd placed an order with Ebner to increase the throughput capacity of its existing HICON/H 2 bell annealer facility. The order comprises the supply of eight HICON/H 2 workbases, three heating bells and five cooling bells, plus the now necessary pressure-reducing station for hydrogen and nitrogen. The furnace facility accommodates low carbon steel strip coils with an outside diameter of up to 2,000mm and a stack height of 5,300mm. This expansion phase brings the number of available HICON/H 2 workbases to 20, each with a maximum net charge weight of 113 tonnes. International Steels Ltd has been relying on Ebner’s HICON/H 2 annealing technology since 2008. The design of the metallically encapsulated workload space together with the quality and reliability of the facilities and customer service were key in the decision to invest in Ebner HICON/H 2 technology again. comprehensive proof of performance reports to industry-recognised standards. This type of tester is easy to use, allowing installers to gather data that is sufficient for their own records, and that can be shared as professional reports with clients. Importantly, these testers are more affordable and, in most organisations, it is feasible for all installers to have their own. So rather than investing in more certifiers, businesses can instead meet their customers’ testing requirements with a mixed fleet. By combining a greater amount of transmission testers alongside a smaller number of certifiers, such as Ideal Networks’ LanTEK ® III, businesses could reduce capital expenditure on testers by up to 57 per cent. To help businesses select the right mix of test equipment for their particular needs, Ideal Networks has launched Test4Less, a suite of solutions, care plans and payment options. Following 18 months of research with data cable installation businesses, Test4Less is designed to help reduce capital expenditure, increase productivity and improve cashflow. Where a certifier is necessary for a business but may post a challenge to cash flow, Test4Less includes a ‘Pay As You Test’ option, to transform a certifier fleet from a capital investment into an operational expense. With ‘Pay As You Test’, test credits for the Ideal Networks LanTEK III cable certifier can be purchased in batches and topped up as and when needed. Businesses can opt for either a free on-loan certifier agreement, or to purchase the certifier with an additional initial up-front payment. Ideal Networks – UK Website : www.idealnetworks.net

overestimating usage requirements for cable certifiers, says Ideal Networks, suggesting that this may be generating extra costs for contractors and installation companies. “Despite the challenge that investing in certifiers can potentially pose to cash flow, installers frequently stated that having more certifiers would make their lives easier,” said Tim Widdershoven, global marketing manager for Ideal Networks. “However, this is seemingly based on a misconception that cable certifiers are needed for the majority of customers’ installation needs.” A cable certifier is only an essential test tool on jobs where the job has specifically stated that a certifier or a cable manufacturer warranty is required. Ideal Networks’ analysis of the work typically carried out by data cable installers showed that manufacturer warranties were typically required in 25 per cent of jobs. Therefore, cable installers may not actually need to invest in more certifiers to improve productivity. “It seems that many cable installers are using certifiers to test and document jobs for their own peace of mind, and to be able to prove performance to customers if the quality of their work is questioned,” added Mr Widdershoven. “Although a certifier is a great tool, if a contractor is only testing for certain activities on Layer 1 of a network, a transmission tester will provide the data required.” 75 per cent of the time, where a warranty is not needed or the job specification does not require a certifier, a cable and network transmission tester, such as Ideal Networks’ SignalTEK ® CT or SignalTEK NT, can be used to create their

Helukabel breaks ground on new headquarters

HELUKABEL, a manufacturer and supplier of cables, wires and accessories, held a ground breaking ceremony for its new USA headquarters. The eight-acre property is located in the Oakview Corporate Park, 1201 Wesemann Drive, in the Chicago suburb of West Dundee. The initial build will be for a 75,000ft 2 facility – 7,000ft 2 allotted for office space and the remaining to be used for warehousing the company’s in-stock cabling products and accessories. The site allows for further expansion just beyond 200,000ft 2 as the company continues to grow. Helukabel USA has been rapidly growing since it was originally founded at the end of 2007. “This is the second physical expansion over the past ten years. The company initially started out in a 13,000ft 2 facility and we expanded into a 43,000ft 2 facility just five years ago,” said president Markus Dannheim. “It was important to find a property in close geographic proximity to our current location to maintain our existing employee base.

The acquisition of this property and construction of its own building is an important strategic milestone for Helukabel USA, creating additional office space for a growing employee base as well as an increased operational and warehousing footprint to facilitate future growth. Helukabel USA Inc – USA Website : www.helukabel.com

“Our employees and the relationships they have created with customers around the world are a fundamental key factor for the continued success our company has experienced over the past years. “It was furthermore important for us to have immediate Interstate access to minimise lead-times for our customers. West Dundee and their pragmatic and progress-oriented city officials made it an easy decision for us to invest within their city limits,” he continued. Participants in the ground breaking included Mr Dannheim; CBRE senior vice president Mike Sedjo; vice president/general manager of Opus Development Company Mike

Axjo and Windak sign joint ownership agreement

Axjo Plastic, like Windak, is a privately owned Swedish company that started in 1945. It manufactures, markets and sells cable drums and other round packaging for cable, fibre and other string products. The company has its headquarters in Gislaved, but the group consists of almost 110 employees and has sales of almost 340 MSEK. “After working with Windak since 2003, it is extra fun to integrate our business more. There will be great advantages for our customers that the machines, already at the design table, are adapted to the correct cable drums,” said Jacob Nilsson, CEO and owner of Axjo Plastic. “We will also come up with new concepts where customers can pay ‘pay by unit’ and thus rent the machines instead of buying them.” Axjo Plastic AB – Sweden

Axjo Plastic AB and Windak AB have signed an agreement in which Axjo Plastic acquires 24 per cent of Windak. The acquisition is in Windak Holding AB and sister companies Windak AB, Windak Inc, Windak Australia and Windak OU in Estonia. Axjo and Windak both focus on the cable industry and have cooperated for a long time. Now they are taking another step – which means greater benefits for customers. Windak is a privately owned Swedish company that started in 1994 and manufactures cable industry machines. “For Windak and for our customers, there are great benefits of closer cooperation. For example, we can construct concepts that reduce shipping costs for the coils properly by mounting the coils directly in the Windak machine,” said Urban Bollö, CEO and partner of Windak AB. “Axjo also has a good sales staff who can reach out, be more present with the customers and inform about all the new technical possibilities Windak has to offer.” Windak has its headquarters in Järfälla, outside Stockholm, and has approximately 67 employees distributed in Sweden, Estonia and the United States. The company has an approximate turnover of 97 MSEK.

Calibrating vibration sensors beyond limits

results. The calibration measurement per sensor takes just a minute. This provides an advantage of saving factory calibration time during volume production. Beyond that, end-to-end calibrations will be possible in the future. Thus, the vibration sensor is calibrated directly using a connected measuring device (eg Vibxpert II). Thanks to the high weight of the base of 7.6 tons and decoupling of this foundation from the remainder of the building, faulty measurements caused by building vibrations (eg caused by employees in the building) are excluded. Extremely suppressed interference sources, such as an adjacent road or train track, are considered in the measurement; however, they do not have any influence on the respective measuring result. It took roughly one year from the initial idea to establish and complete the new calibration laboratory. In the meantime, the calibration laboratory is fully functional and is extensively used for research and production of Pruftechnik vibration sensors. Pruftechnik Dieter Busch AG – Germany Website : www.pruftechnik.com

SEVEN tons of concrete and 600kg of granite form the foundation for the calibration of vibration sensors with an average weight of just 50g each. Using two calibration systems, it is now possible to calibrate Pruftechnik vibration sensors beyond the standard limits to ensure reliable readings for a long period of time from factory calibration as well as after re-calibration. The deepest secrets of Pruftechnik Condition Monitoring are literally located in the basement. In addition to the Paralign ® and alignment laser calibration laboratory, a completely new calibration laboratory was set up for Condition Monitoring vibration sensors. Two shakers on a solid concrete-granite foundation enable the calibration of in-house Pruftechnik vibration sensors. Both new high-frequency shakers generate vibrations in the ranges of 0 to 200 Hz and 5 to 50,000 Hz. With that, the analysis and calibration possibilities exceed the limits of requested standards and measuring tolerances. Especially in research and development, Pruftechnik now has new capabilities to calibrate vibration sensors even more precisely and to develop more meaningful measuring

Automatic line for wire and strand ❍ The automatic BAO packaging line is a new and innovative concept

This provides safe operation for the operators in the field. The whole line is surrounded by safety gates with operator access doors that can only be opened if the line is not in operation. The gate is interlocked by a system that immediately stops the operation of the line if one of the doors is opened. During the whole packaging process there are two strapping operations: one to strap the single coil and the other to strap the bundle. In the final operation, the bundle is then stretch wrapped with a resistant plastic film and prepared for shipping. MFL Group – Italy Website : www.mflgroup.com

one coil every minute and for strand it can produce a coil every two minutes, giving an important output production for this product. The need for this line can extend also to the cable industry for drop off coils. Customers interested in the BAO line should be informed that there are some package limitations. For example, the coils’ inner diameter cannot have a core smaller than 500mm (20"). With this project, which includes high carbon strand packages, safety has also been closely observed. The line is provided with a robot that automatically applies the plastic caps to the head and tail of the strand at the same time the cut is made.

THE automatic BAO packaging line is a new and innovative concept for the production of steel and strand wire. The automatic line is a fully integrated process that takes large spools from two to six tons of wire and strand and repackages them into fully wrapped bundles that can contain a number of coils depending on their size and weight. The line can handle low to high carbon bright and galvanised wire as well as bright and galvanised 1+6 strand. Wire sizes range from 1.8 to 5mm and strand sizes go from 3/16" to 7/16". The coil sizes that form the finished bundle range from 10kg (20lb) to a maximum of 60kg (135lb). For wire, the BAO automatic double head produces

New two-in-one crosshead solution by Rosendahl ❍ Rosendahl’s RX 12 double-use crosshead

Each melt flow includes an individual adapter and distributor for the required material. The crosshead is ready for use after a change-over time of less than ten minutes. Benefits include: • High product flexibility • Only one trolley, one body • Change-over within ten minutes • Process of differing materials on one crosshead • Temperature and pressure are illustrated via RIO line control Rosendahl Nextrom GmbH – Austria Website : www.rosendahlnextrom.com

ROSENDAHL’S double-use crosshead serves two needs in one crosshead. Not only will the cable manufacturer save money over buying two crossheads for its purposes, but it will also be able to process very different materials on one solution, like high filled LSOH (commonly used for building wire production) to low density cross linkable materials such as XLPE. Additionally, the crosshead is ready to run many typical materials for insulation like PVC, PE, PP and TPE on the RX12 double-use crosshead with the best material feed. This will be achieved by two independent melt flow sections with this crosshead. universal RX12 extrusion

Helping meet standards for weights and measurement PROTON Products has introduced a new service for customers of its InteliSENS SL and SLR non-contact laser doppler speed and length measurement sensors. Proton recognises that many its customers need independent verification and certification of their InteliSENS speed and length sensors to meet either local or national inspection standards for weights and measurement delivery of their products. In response, Proton has introduced its new speed and length verification table. This uses a motor-driven, precision-machined calibration wheel rotating at a regulated speed with a run length of at least 10,000m to verify the accuracy of the customer’s sensor. The laser beams from the test gauge create a doppler frequency pattern on the tangential surface of a calibration wheel that is used to measure its speed and cumulative run length. The gauge readings are compared against calibration reference values to verify the sensor’s absolute accuracy. This unit conforms to UKAS certified equipment standards and test procedures and can verify the calibration of Proton’s InteliSENS sensors to within 0.02 per cent. Customers are requested to send their units overnight to Proton for verification and adjustment (if necessary). The sensor will be returned the following day with a certificate associated with its unique serial number as proof of accuracy. Proton Products – USA Website : www.protonproducts.com

Sikora launches optical offline inspection and analysis

PURITY Concept V (Visual) from Sikora is an offline system for optical inspection and analysis of transparent and coloured plastic pellets by means of an intelligent light table. The material to be tested moves automatically through the system and contamination such as black specks are visualised. The system is suitable for sample testing of produced material or for incoming goods inspection. Until now, sample testing of pellets has been carried out mainly by means of light tables. The material to be tested was optically illuminated on a table and manually inspected by the operator. This method is dependent on the examiner and provides a limited repeatability. Additional limitations are the size of the contamination seen by the human eye as well as the classification by size. Alternative optical offline inspection devices feed the test material into a hopper and through a channel into the inspection area. Thereby, images are recorded successively and contaminated material is removed. Due to the blending of the removed material, a clear allocation of the contamination to the graphic material as well as a follow-up inspection are impossible. Purity Concept V contains the advantages of a light table, complemented by automatic offline material control. The intelligent system moves the test material on a tray through the inspection area. Within seconds, the material is inspected

❍ Purity Concept V for automatic optical inspection of plastic material

automatically by the colour camera and contaminated material is marked directly on the sample tray by a beamer. By analysing the recorded images, contamination on the surface of transparent and coloured material is detected automatically, visualised and evaluated. A clear allocation of the contamination and follow-up inspection are possible at any time. Thus, the system contributes to quality control and

process optimisation. Sikora AG – Germany Website : www.sikora.net
