China expansion for Elantas

ELANTAS, a division of the speciality chemicals group Altana, is acquiring the wire enamels activities of Changzhou Hongbo Paint Co Ltd and thus growing its business in China. The products taken over will be manufactured in Tongling (Anhui province). Elantas has already expanded its production site there. In 2016, the wire enamels business of Changzhou Hongbo Paint achieved sales of around €16m. “Changzhou Hongbo Paint’s polyurethane wire enamels optimally supplement our product portfolio,” said Dr Guido Forstbach, president of Elantas. “With them, we will be able to offer existing and new customers even more individualised solutions and strengthen our technology leadership in the wire enamels sector. The Tongling site is ideal for the further expansion of our Chinese business.” Wire enamels are insulating materials for the electrical and electronics industry. They are found in electric motors, cars, TV sets, wind turbines and computers. Innovations in the wire enamels segment enable product developers to build smaller and more efficient electric units such as motors and generators and thus save material and energy. China is Elantas’s most important sales and growth market worldwide. In the 2016 fiscal year, more than half of the division’s sales were generated in Asia. With an increase of 15 per cent to €372m, the Altana Group as a whole achieved its highest sales in Asia in the first half of 2017. Sales in China in the first six months of the year rose by 23 per cent to €198m. Six EAF Consteel Evolution plants in China ❍ One of the six plants in operation in China

DURING the last eight months, Tenova has been awarded contracts for a total of six Electrical Arc Furnaces (EAF) Consteel ® Evolution in China. Steelmaking industries in China are starting to use a different approach to their business, converting their steel shop plants with EAF technology. In order to improve the reduction rate of CO 2 emissions promoted by the Chinese government, Chinese steelmakers are starting to increase the share of electrical steelmaking in comparison to blast furnace (BF) or basic oxygen furnace (BOF). This trend is evidenced by the interest in Tenova EAF Consteel Evolution. The awarding of the contracts underlined the recognised advantages for this technology that, in terms of steel making from scrap, allows savings in electrical consumption, high productivity, high quality steel, protection of the environment and safety. Tenova states that Chinese producers are recognising the EAF Consteel brand for its reliability in production and in project schedules. Thanks to continuous improvement in research, the Tenova Consteel system is a fully tested industrial process, with more than 50 plants in operation, that continuously pre-heats and feeds metallic charge to the EAF, while simultaneously controlling gaseous emissions. “In China we have acquired an important market share in steel making, thanks to our capability to cope with the customer’s requirement of fast-track projects and the proven track record of successful installations,” said Paolo Argenta, senior vice president, Tenova Metals. “EAF Consteel is a leading technology for Tenova that continues to be attractive for the steel making sector, and, during 2017, we have acknowledged a renewed interest for this technology both in Europe and in North America.” Tenova – Italy Website : www.tenova.com

Australia Singapore Cable project passes halfway mark and reaches critical milestones

The cable was made in Calais, France, by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN). On the other side of the English Channel the company finished work on the repeaters at a factory in Greenwich in the UK. The other two-thirds of the assembled cable were transferred from ship to ship in January near Christmas Island. From there a second cable laying vessel, the Ile de Batz , laid the cable as it travelled south from Christmas Island to Perth. The Ile de Re started in Singapore and headed south to Christmas Island. Mr Mackinnon says the reason for using two ships is because the two legs will use different cable laying techniques. “From Singapore to Christmas Island the cable will be buried up to 4m below the seabed using a 40-tonne plough. This is far slower than the usual cable laying technique; the ship can only move at a few hundred metres per hour.” While it is unusual to bury a submarine cable, it is necessary in this instance because the ASC travels through the Java Sea, which is shallow and highly trafficked. Mr Mackinnon said an earlier cable running through this area is frequently broken, mainly due to fishing boats cutting the cable, which can take weeks to fix. Furthermore, there are issues getting permits for ship movements in the area, and Indonesian maritime law requires contractors to use local crews. The situation is different on the ASC leg between Christmas Island and Perth. The southern cable section passes through a deep ocean. Here the cable is simply laid on the sea bed. Mr MacKinnon said, “The boat laying this section can move far quicker, covering kilometres in an hour.” Vocus Group – Australia Website : www.vocus.com.au

BUILDING work on Vocus Communications’ Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) has now passed the halfway point, reaching a number of critical milestones. The Vocus-owned project, worth USD$170m, provides an important link between Australia and two of Asia’s strongest economies – Indonesia and Singapore. “Once complete, the ASC will provide greater connectivity, bandwidth and reliability for business and consumers, building on Vocus’s 21,000km fibre network. We’re very pleased with the rate of progress being made on the project,” said Vocus Group CEO Geoff Horth. Luke Mackinnon, head of Vocus International, said: “There is a lot of activity that goes on with the civil engineering works and the manufacturing before we send a ship to pick up the cable. “The main cable laying starts in February and will continue throughout March. We will perform the final splice in April, enabling the commissioning to begin. That will take place in May and June, giving us a ready-for-service date soon after.”

PROTON Products has set new standards for high-specification measurement performance. The company’s InteliSENS mini series non-contact laser Doppler speed and length sensors deliver high product performance, based on technical specifications, design, intelligence and process interfacing. Proton’s intelligent laser Doppler non-contact speed and length sensor replaces contacting encoders that encounter slippage, wear and marking. This accurate speed and length measurement helps prevent product give-away or short-length delivery, which translates into financial benefits across a wide range of applications. The InteliSENS SL and SLR mini series provide both uni-directional and bi-directional speed measurement up to 5,000m/min, with the latter being able to measure from a standstill. With a measurement repeatability of ±0.02 per cent and an accuracy of better than ±0.05 per cent, it assures correct final product length delivery to the customer. In situations where the product acceleration exceeds 1,000m/min, the InteliSENS mini’s measurement update rate of 200kHz makes it the fastest on the market, according to Proton, capable of delivering accurate, high-resolution measurement under rapidly changing process conditions. Standard protocols for the InteliSENS mini’s embedded communications library include RS232, Ethernet TCP/IP and CAN bus with Profinet, Profibus, DeviceNet, Ethernet /IP and Wi-Fi as options. This capability produces straightforward communications to instrumentation platforms with the ability to deliver large volumes of data for maintenance diagnostics, plus process analysis, reporting and archiving on plantwide information platforms. The InteliSENS mini series form factor is 140mmL x 105mmW and 50mmH, weighing just 1.1kg. A comprehensive range of integrated process interfaces are available for measurement and control purposes. GUILL Tool has introduced Series 725, a co-extrusion crosshead design for tray cable applications. With all-stainless steel construction, Series 725 offers machine builders and end users many advantages, including the patented Guill Seal Right system of self-aligning tapered deflector and body design. Series 725 was developed by Guill engineering, in partnership with a customer, to convert a production line from a tandem Series 725 co-extrusion crosshead

line with two heads a distance apart into a co-extrusion line with a single head applying both layers of PVC in a single operation. End-user benefits of this new co-extrusion crosshead include a considerably shorter changeover time (one head is better than two, in this case), less scrap with a single head setup, improved product quality from the increased adhesion between layers, as melt adheres to melt rather than extrudate, plus the inner layer is not exposed to the environment, allowing contaminates between the layers. Additional features of this new
