Wire & Cable ASIA – July/August 2019

Three days in Bangkok!

Innovation is a word that appears frequently in the issues of Wire & Cable ASIA . Predominantly, it is companies pushing the limits of their machines, providing more efficient and cost-effective solutions to customers. In this issue, however, the word is used alongside the next staging of wire Southeast Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, in September. The country is described as a business hub for the ASEAN states. It is little wonder why. Exhibitors – numbering more than 370 – mainly hail from the neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and China, although there are many that head to Bangkok’s vibrant investment climate from Germany, the UK and Austria. Thailand is seen as the gateway for developing regional markets, and exhibitors and visitors alike understand that all too well, with more than 8,000 visitors from 50 countries expected over the three days of the trade fair. You can catch all the latest news about the exhibition on page 8 of this issue, and our September issue will feature a show special on the event.

As if to highlight the growth in the region, Davis-Standard has expanded its site in Suzhou, China, giving an additional 3,251m 2 to its facility that will house control panel assembly and warehousing. Full details can be found on page 16.

Death of MAC chairman William Gould

In 1992, under Mr Gould’s leadership, the company launched the ERIC V, the first fully computerised eddy current tester. Featuring a real-time, full-colour graphic display and sophisticated software control of test parameters and analysis of test signals, this instrument set a new benchmark for the industry. He oversaw the company’s expansion into worldwide markets along with the development of sophisticated automated test systems for a broad range of products. “He combined his knowledge of science with a keen understanding of the financial and strategic positioning of the company and a genuine desire to provide an opportunity for each employee to grow to their full potential. The result was not only the successful growth of the business, but also the long-term commitment of countless employees all over the world,” said his son, Robert R Gould, MAC’s recently elected chairman. MAC’s business now includes plants in Elmsford, New York, USA; Boardman, Ohio, USA; Östersund, Sweden; subsidiaries in Italy, the UK, Australia and Sweden; and representatives around the world. MAGNETIC Analysis Corporation has announced the recent death of its chairman, William S Gould 3 rd . Mr Gould succeeded his father, a company founder, as president in 1964, and remained in that role until 2007, when he became chairman, a position he held until his death. During his tenure, he successfully built the company from a small USA-based non-destructive test designer and manufacturer. It now provides NDT eddy current, ultrasonic and flux leakage systems and services. In 2016, he was honoured by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing for his contributions to the NDT industry through his “knowledge and dedication” for over 50 years. Mr Gould held a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Yale, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar. Over the course of his years as president of MAC, he led the company into many new developments, beginning with the introduction of the ERIC eddy current tester in 1968, which featured solid state electronics, phase gating and, later pulsed eddy current techniques. During the 1970s, he expanded the company’s products to include flux leakage testers, and in 1989, MAC introduced its own line of Echomac ® ultrasonic rotary testers for tube and bar.

Revamping of machines and lines

THANKS to its expertise, Sampsistemi and its service division C2S are equipped to manage the reconditioning or revamping of a machine, enabling customers to increase equipment reliability and minimise costs. The expertise ranges across three main business sectors: drawing, extrusion and rotating equipment. The advantages of revamping in comparison to a new purchase are lower costs and shorter delivery times, in the case of machines and lines that have been used in-line with the original maintenance and operating instructions. The main advantages of a retrofit, upgrade and rebuilding by Sampsistemi and C2S are: • Expertise in machines and relative technology • Technical documentation for rebuilding and reconditioning parts • A proactive stock of thousands of items, ready for shipment, for all brands • Technical validation of the components that have been replaced The rebuilding procedure begins with a C2S engineer inspecting the machine or line at the customer’s site. During the inspection, the technician can see the machine in operation (whenever possible) and, based on customer information and know-how, define if complete reconditioning is needed or if only some parts must be replaced to restore the original quality and technical efficiency of the machine. The complete work can be done either at the customer’s site or in one of Sampsistemi’s high-performance workshops, based in Europe, China and the USA.

Smart line control system RIO ❍ Getting smart with RIO from Rosendahl Nextrom

INFORMATION determines success in the market. The right information consists of collecting, organising and preparing it on a regular basis in order to subsequently draw conclusions and take the appropriate measures. In principle, that sounds easy: after all, each of us already does that during a normal day at work. What is becoming increasingly important is that this process functions in an analogue and automated fashion. You no longer have to retrieve the relevant information, since it is now made available to you. That is the new premise according to which Rosendahl Nextrom designs its production solutions. The so-called Smart Factory is already becoming a reality to the company. RIO (Rosendahl Integrated Operation System) is a solution that meets these requirements and automatically organises and makes information available. Information about production is automatically collected, aggregated, saved locally or optionally via the cloud, analysed, reported and then optimised. For instance, each reel produced has its own special ID, which makes direct access to its data possible. From the process parameters and production times all the way to the machine operator, all the information about the reel can be accessed. The advantage is that you can automatically access information about production performance, quality reports, reel protocols, error message-related statistics, energy reports, OEE figures, etc. In addition, smart package add-ons for consumption measurement, extruder screw identification marking and integration in ERP/MES-systems are available.
