Wire & Cable ASIA – January/February 2018

High expectations as Düsseldorf is on the horizon 2018 starts with high expectations for the industry, no doubt fuelled by the fact that the most important exhibition in the wire and cable calendar will be held in just four months’ time. Düsseldorf – synonymous with the industry – will stage wire 2018 in April. No matter from where you work in this global industry, the German city’s exhibition is the first to be penned into the calendars of companies around the world. There is already a high level of visitor interest, and exhibition space is at a premium as the industry gears up for a week-long extravaganza in Germany. Our coverage starts on page 50 with the exhibitor listing, and in our March issue of Wire & Cable ASIA and sister publication EuroWire companies will be giving readers an insight into what they are displaying. There also seems to be a distinct Italian flavour in this issue, with both Prysmian and Tenova leading the way in new business deals in the Asia Pacific region. For Prysmian, this takes the form of a new site at Prysmian Technology Jiangsu, which has begun operations and is firmly part of

the company’s plans for expansion in the area. Operating five production lines in a site of 190,000m 2 , the plant is a direct bid by the company to enhance its competitiveness in the Chinese utilities market. See page 8 for the full story.

This coater grants a uniform deposit of the oxylane product for the strip used for automotive adhesive bonding applications. Both lines are equipped with double unwinding pay-off reels and with a tailor-made stitcher with two dies and automatic spray lubrication system. The lines will start production at the beginning of 2019. After the engineering phase, the most critical and technological equipment will be manufactured and pre-assembled directly at Tenova headquarters in Italy, to shorten the commissioning phase at the plant and satisfy the client’s request in terms of time schedule. This new order confirms Tenova as a reliable supplier in processing lines for aluminium thanks to its continuous effort to improve the design and the manufacture of its supply to maximise line availability. Tenova – Italy Website : www.tenova.com

security, police and customs. Each of these systems has required customisation of the cabling including specific colour coding. In total, the number of installed RJ45 ports will exceed 90,000 in the first phase of the project. İGA, the company building the new airport, has designed its mission-critical data centre infrastructure with R&M’s latest products including Netscale, claimed to be the world’s highest-density fibre cable management solution. Given the immense scale of the airport, R&M has also supplied its flagship automated infrastructure management solution, R&MinteliPhy, which centralises and automates the entire cabling infrastructure. This greatly simplifies management and will allow İGA’s IT team to rapidly and conveniently scale the network as needed. R&M states that it is at the forefront of innovation in the structured cabling industry, and invests approximately five per cent of its yearly revenue in R&D. This, combined with the company’s ability to highly customise its extensive product range, proved to be a decisive factor in the success of the project. Mr Riva said that İstanbul New Airport has given the company a great opportunity to deliver its innovative solutions. In total, 45 different R&M products were selected for the project. R&M assigned a dedicated specialist team to be present on-site throughout the deployment of the solutions. R&M (Reichle & De-Massari) AG – Switzerland Website : www.rdm.com

R&M, a global Swiss developer and provider of cabling systems for high-quality network infrastructures, has successfully started the delivery and implementation of a cutting-edge network cabling infrastructure for İstanbul’s new airport. The airport will be constructed over an area of 76.5 million square metres to the north of Istanbul and will be completed in four phases. The first phase will be finalised in 2018 with the opening of two runways and a terminal with 90 million passenger capacity. Once complete, the new airport will host flights to more than 350 destinations with an annual passenger capacity up to 200 million. On completion of all four phases, İstanbul New Airport will have six active runways, 250 aircraft and parking facilities for 18,000 cars. With the increased utilisation and dependence on IT systems in modern air travel, a high-performance cabling network is the critical platform for airport’s entire internal and external telecom- munications plus other operational applications and services. Michel Riva, CEO of R&M, said that İstanbul New Airport is its biggest project in Turkey and one of the largest globally. On completion of the first phase, R&M will have supplied a total length of 4,500 km of copper and over 1,600 km of fibre-optic cables. Leveraging its expertise in large-scale projects for the aviation sector, the manufacturer aims to finish the installation of the cabling infrastructure by the first quarter of 2018. The cabling network will connect and support the key airport systems including its ICT infrastructure for

production facilities and warehouses at its headquarters in Meschede, South Westphalia. A new 3,000-ton press is a further milestone. Moreover, in 2016 a new sales and distribution branch office, Theleico Abrasives (Wuxi) Co Ltd, was established in China with a view to create further storage capacities and to improve service. Products will keep the quality “Made in Germany”, even though Theleico carries out sales and distribution activities in more than 45 countries. The new “Best Supplier Award” has not only been presented because of the expansions of recent years but in particular because of the process knowledge and understanding at Theleico. Processes are documented at the customer in order to be able to develop a custom-tailored grinding tool for the application. “This does not only result in quality improvements but often also in cost savings,” said Mr Grans, while already planning the next stage of improvement. By introducing a new ERP system customers are to benefit from even more effective processes at Theleico. Theleico Schleiftechnik GmbH & Co KG – Germany Website : www.theleico.de

THE “Best Supplier Award 2017” was presented to Theleico, a manufacturer of grinding wheels and abrasive bodies for industrial applications with headquarters in Meschede, Germany, by the Federation of the German Spring Industry (VDFI). This is the fourth time that the family business in the Sauerland region has convinced the jury in the category “process materials”, which no company has previously achieved. When deciding on the award, the members of the Federation of the German Spring Industry put special emphasis on criteria such as quotation, adherence to delivery dates, number and handling of complaints, service, technical service and flexibility. To get a precise assessment, the period under review is three years. “We are proud of the fact that the criteria quality and outstanding service to which we attach the greatest value in our company have again convinced the jury,” said Frank Grans, managing director. “However, we will not rest on our laurels. We want to get better also in the future.” When looking back, it becomes clear that this inner drive works at Theleico. During the past ten years the company, which was founded in 1880, has extended the production area and established other

company’s global diversification into engineered materials. “The strength of our Huber silica business was built, in part, from the collaborative spirit of our silica employees, who adhere to best practices in environment, health, safety and sustainability, ethical behaviour, respect for people and operational excellence. These guiding principles at Huber are the foundation of our company culture and ability to deliver superb value for our customers,” said Mike Marberry, president and chief executive officer. “We thank our silica employees and know their talents and expertise will be highly valued by Evonik.” Huber will continue as usual to serve its HEM customers who use other non-silica materials such as ground calcium carbonate and fire-retardant additives across a broad range of applications. As an expert in developing and manufacturing speciality engineered materials, HEM takes great pride in delivering products and service to its industrial customers worldwide. J M Huber – USA Website : www.huber.com

The J M Huber Corporation has completed the sale of the silica business unit of Huber Engineered Materials (HEM) to Evonik Industries AG, a global speciality chemicals company. The $630 million transaction was completed after approvals from the European Commission and other global regulatory bodies, and transfers ownership of the HEM Silica facilities in North America, Europe and Asia to Evonik. Strategically, the transfer of the silica business is advantageous for both companies. Proceeds from the sale will enable Huber to invest and expand its product portfolio in other areas, including potential future acquisitions of speciality chemicals or materials businesses. For Evonik, bringing together the two diverse silica businesses will further improve the company’s value proposition as an integrated global provider, better positioned to serve a broader base of customer needs, particularly in North America and Asia. The silica business has been a fundamental part of Huber for more than 60 years, providing a runway for the

then Leonische Drahtwerke,” Mr Cummins recalls. He experienced at close quarters how the company’s prominence grew – and how the stance of employees changed. “They rapidly developed respect for Leoni as a company that is loyal to its staff. They felt that Leoni is taking care of them.” Leoni meanwhile has as many as ten plants for wiring systems as well as automotive and industrial cables in China. The cables specialist developed in line with China’s rapid economic growth: “Leoni had the opportunity to keep pace with this growth – and we took it. At the time, in the early 1990s, we had roughly 100 employees in China; now there are more than 8,500,” Mr Cummins said. Leoni intends to drive its own globalisation forward in the future, in order to distribute its business more evenly between the three economic regions of the Americas, Asia and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). “For me, the trick is to combine two things: On the one hand, the systematic German approach with good planning, good resources, good expertise and technological progress. And, on the other hand, the flexibility and enthusiasm of the people as well as the market opportunities locally.” To Mr Cummins, the company’s future success will lie in combining these two sides: “If we manage to strike a balance, then we will be able to be really successful on all our markets.” Leoni AG – Germany Website : www.leoni.com

FROM the small Franconian wire production shop to one of the world’s largest cable and wiring system manufacturers: Leoni began to establish cable harness production outside Germany as long ago as 1977. The first steps into the Americas and Asia followed in the 1990s, and Leoni’s market became more global. As part of the company’s 100 th anniversary celebrations, a number of employees have gone on video to charter the development of the company, and what it means in specific terms for an internationally successful future. Jerry Cummins is the latest employee to go in front of the camera, and the video with his testimony is accessible at www.100.leoni.com, as well as on several social media channels. Leoni first expanded into Asia in 1993, gaining a foothold with a joint venture in Singapore and plants in China, with its first production facilities in Xiamen, in the south-east of the People’s Republic, and in Changzhou, located in the east of the country. “Leoni was early at the time in going global with the help of several acquisitions and by internationalising its business. I believe that, had the company not done so, many of our facilities in Europe and in Germany would now be closed,” said Mr Cummins, who was part of the company’s move into the Asian market from the start. At the time, the cable and wiring systems manufacturer was still completely unknown as an employer: “Many didn’t even know how to pronounce our name, given that was

Reliable welds reduce downtime

The smaller P1000 hydraulic model, for joining copper rod 6 to 16mm and aluminium rod up to 20mm, has a compact footprint of just 1,100mm x 1,245mm. To reduce downtime, the machine is equipped with quick release dies and an easily adjustable die setting mechanism. PWM dies are all precision engineered in-house by the company’s own skilled technicians to ensure accuracy. Like all PWM cold welding machines, the P1500 and P1000 are quiet, clean and user-friendly. Once the weld parameters have been set using the control panel, the operator simply slides the rod into either side of the machine, presses a button to close the clamps that grip the material, and presses the ‘start’ button. The two ends of the rod do not require any preparation prior to welding and the two butt ends are automatically aligned when they are placed in the die, saving time and effort. Even 30mm rod can be cold welded in less than five minutes, and the machines remove the weld burr or ‘flash’ automatically. The weld is reliable, permanent and stronger than the parent material, and simply requires a quick clean to make it ready

FAST, cost-effective and straightforward, the process of cold pressure welding has a lot to offer wire and cable manufacturers. Cold welded materials are not subjected to heat, so the finished bond is very stable, and because the process produces a worked structure as opposed to the cast structure obtained by fusion welding, weld quality is excellent. Non-ferrous rod sections as large as 30mm in diameter can be bonded permanently using cold welding. British company PWM, which has been manufacturing high-performance cold welding machines and dies for over 30 years, has developed a range of technically advanced machines specifically for joining materials of this size. Recent demand from customers in the automotive and renewables industry has seen sales of the company’s two largest machines increase significantly. The P1500 electro-hydraulic rod welder, suitable for large cross-sectional areas, is designed for copper rod 15 to 25mm and aluminium rod up to 30mm. Although powerful, the machine is very energy efficient since it requires electrical power only for the hydraulic pump motor – the independent grip and upset forces are produced by an arrangement of hydraulic cylinders.

Increasing accuracy of measurements

CALIBRATION measurement technology means characterising the measurement behaviour of a measuring unit by comparing the indications provided by the unit with a known “measurement standard” (a physical object) used in the calibration procedure. During the calibration, the measuring instrument is not subject to changes, as opposed to adjustment where a measuring unit is tuned or modified in order to minimise the measurement errors or to guarantee that the measurement errors do not exceed predetermined limits. Verification in legal metrology, however, pertains to the examination and marking and/or issuing of a verification certificate for a measuring system. The examining authority verifies whether the measuring unit satisfies the corresponding legal prerequisites. Unlike for legal verification, where the validity of a marking or certificate is defined by law, the validity of a calibration interval follows practical requirements such as manufacturer indications, requirements of the applied quality standards, or company internal and customer-specific regulations. In order for measurement results to be compared, they must be traced back to a national or international measurement standard. To this purpose, the display of the measuring must be compared with the measurement standards in one or more stages. In each of these stages a calibration is carried out with a measurement standard that has been previously calibrated with a higher-level measurement standard. According to the ranking of the measurement standard – from a working or company reference measurement standard to a national or international measurement standard – there is a calibration hierarchy to be respected by the organisation performing the calibration. This stretches from the in-house laboratory through accredited laboratories up to the national metrological institute. Different standards, regulations and directives must be respected when carrying out calibrations. A measurement unit must satisfy basic requirements before it can be calibrated. One must also know and consider the in

precision limits are not met.” European legislation has similar requirements. Zumbach’s measuring units are calibrated using reference and also working measurement standards that are certified by the federal office for metrology (www.metas.ch) or by accredited laboratories. Each unit is supplied with a detailed calibration protocol. All the measuring heads of the ODAC ® series have a self-compensation function (Patent DE3111356), which makes regular calibration superfluous, except when components have to be replaced. All the relevant parameters for accuracy are continuously monitored by the measuring electronics and are automatically compensated. A calibration protocol presents the results of the calibration and documents the traceability to a national measurement standard for the considered physical units in accordance with the International System of Units (SI). physical conditions under which a calibration is carried out. Regulations are essentially applicable when a company decides to respect a standard or directive or when it delivers products that are subject to legal requirements (like in the medical or transportation markets). Standards and directives, such as the ISO 9000 series, are becoming increasingly important for quality assurance in all industrial nations. This standard explicitly requires, among other things, the calibration of all test equipment that directly or indirectly influences the quality of the product. Zumbach Electronic adheres to different directives and standards. The regulations of the FDA (American Food and Drug Administration), for example, are important worldwide with respect to international trading relations. The CFR (Code of Federal Regulation) requires “the calibration of instruments, apparatus, gauges, and recording devices at suitable intervals in accordance with an established written program containing specific directions, schedules, limits for accuracy and precision, and provisions for remedial action in the event accuracy and/or
