Premiere of jointly developed measuring system In December 2023, Kocks Measure + Inspect and LAP Measurement Technology announced their cooperation in the joint development and marketing of measurement and surface inspection technology.

The two companies unveiled the result of this cooperation at the start of wire 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany: the 4D Eagle S hybrid measuring system for precise profile measurement and surface inspection. The system uses laser light section technology to capture the complete profile of long products and to precisely detect and classify various rolling defects. Users can access the Smart Core X software application for a detailed analysis of the acquired data. 4D Eagle S can also be integrated into higher-level quality assurance systems using OPC-UA. The two partners pooled their extensive know-how as part of the project. LAP has operated in the field of laser measurement systems for the steel industry for decades, while Kocks contributed its expertise as a specialist in three-roll technology for precise special bar quality production. Commenting at the time of the original announcement, Fabian Beck, director global sales at LAP Measurement Technology, said, “The teams in rolling mills benefit from far-reaching transparency and the opportunity to optimise process and product quality sustainably.” Dr-Ing Santino Keusemann, general manager of Kocks Measure + Inspect, added, “Thanks to the synergies we have tapped, Eddy current technology for higher sampling rates Conventional optical and laser methods for the measurement of cross-section area and mass flow in hot-rolled products do not usually have the highest reliability because of the limited sampling rate and deviation of 3-4 per cent, despite their elevated cost. The robust MASSdiscover system from ISEND is based on eddy current technology, which provides higher sampling rates. The system is capable of providing real-time information on the product’s mass and cross-section area with a deviation of only 0.5 per cent in hot-rolled products, allowing rolling mills to operate closer to the tolerance provided by the standards. The real-time information offered by the system can also be used to automatically adjust the rolling mill rolls, providing smoother control of the electrical motors. A study carried out in Peru showed the benefits of using a MASSdiscover system in a rolling mill producing steel reinforcing bars with an annual production of 205,201 tonnes. The study demonstrated that in the production of bars of 3 / 8 " diameter and 9m in length, the application of a MASSdiscover system allowed for a reduction of 5.5 per cent in the linear weight, which translated into an increased production of ten bars per billet. This amounted to an increase in production of 7,680 bars per day. ISEND SA www.isend.es
