Sustainable welding solutions for power cable manufacturing
user-friendly. It requires no external power source or set-up and is quick and easy to operate. For larger wire sizes, PWM offers the HP100 and HP200 mobile air/hydraulic cold welders that enable operators to weld non-ferrous material from 1 to 6.5mm without effort. Power consumption is minimal since the machines require only a supply of compressed air, which can be provided from either a central air supply or a dedicated compressor. Both machines are mounted on trolleys, so they can be moved easily to the work area, saving effort and reducing downtime. PWM reports that sales of its energy efficient rod welders have increased significantly over the last three years, as manufacturers seek greener alternatives to electrical butt welders. The EP500, for non-ferrous material from 5 to 15mm, is one of the company’s best-selling products. The durable machine is simple
As the price of materials and energy continues to increase, power cable manufacturers are adopting sustainable practices and processes to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs and meet customer expectations. whether manually operated or powered by energy-efficient pneumatic and hydraulic systems, can contribute to manufacturers’ green production lines, streamline and speed up operations and enhance worker safety and operating comfort. PWM Ltd, which celebrates 40 years of service to the wire and cable industry this year, produces a comprehensive range of cold welding machines suitable for power cable production. The M101 manual cold welder, for copper wire (1 to 3.6mm) or aluminium (1 to 5mm), can be used on a workbench or supplied with a trolley. to operate and maintain, and is powered by an advanced pneumatic system: electrical power is only required for the operating system used to set the weld parameters. As a specialist designer, manufacturer and supplier of cold welding equipment, PWM designs and makes its machines and dies in-house and tests them throughout manufacture to ensure total accuracy. Machines for the production of power cables up to extra-high voltage The manufacture of power cables depends on the purpose for which they are made – particularly the equipment that they will power on, which will determine the amount of voltage/ current carrying capacity needed. For this reason, with precise manufacturing techniques and know-how to ensure the reliability of high-voltage power cables, Pourtier has developed a variety of equipment for use at different stages of the process.
SETIC and Pourtier manufacture a comprehensive range of rotating machines dedicated to power cables: uni-lay or counter stranding lay conductors. SETIC’s TC2600-4M is a high-speed large double twist (2,600mm) for cable makers stranding large bare conductors from 7 to 61 wires, in copper and aluminium, round or straight sector, in 61-wire uni-lay production (compressed and compacted) up to 400mm 2 (750MCM) Cu and 630mm 2 (1250MCM) Al. The line can also strand class 5/6 flexible conductor up to 240mm 2 (500MCM) and lay-up insulated conductors up 30mm (1.18") cable diameter. Pourtier’s “RFS” heavy-duty rigid strander line (630 or 800mm reel) is designed for stranding up to 163 wires with pulling capstan up to 80 tons, with steel wire armouring and copper wire screening. These types of lines strand bare copper, copper alloy, aluminium, and aluminium alloy conductors up to 5,000mm 2 . The drum twister designed by Pourtier integrates all parameters to fit with the production requirements of high voltage and extra-high voltage power cable (Milliken) for laying-up of Cu or Al conductors. Drum twisters are specially designed for round or sector-shaped (straight or pre-spiralled), five or more cores and for HV Milliken cables – segmental or sectoral pre-spiralled Cu (five to seven cores). Pourtier supplies drum twisters up to 60T open cradle. SETIC Pourtier sas www.setic-pourtier.com
Pourtier has a long involvement in the development of power cables, giving it unique experience as a machinery maker. In recent years, its engineers have introduced up-to date technologies and new designs to meet the stringent requirements of high-voltage power cables.
