The first bar has been rolled on Kocks’s largest RSB Commissioning at Chinese greenfield rolling mill Chinese steel producer Chengde

In the newly built 1,000,000 t/a rolling mill for larger dimensions, an RSB 500++/4 in StarDrive design has now been successfully commissioned. Straight after rolling the first bar, the four-stand finishing block started regular production. The RSB 500++ rolls straight bars with a diameter of 60 to 160mm onto the cooling bed. This largest reducing and sizing block is in the advanced RSB design. The further scope of supply included the remote control for stands and guides, which allows operational parameters to be adjusted from the control stand. In addition to the roll shop equipment, Kocks installed the Bamicon Octopus software and hardware features that assist operators in the stand and guide preparation and support the entire tooling process in the roll shop. Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG www.kocks.de

In 2017, Chengde Jianlong modernised its small bar mill SBQ line with a Kocks RSB® 370++/4 in 5.0 design, which resulted in an improvement in product quality and mill output. For the current project, the steel producer again relied on Kocks’s portfolio for producing speciality steels.

Jianlong Iron & Steel Co Ltd has successfully rolled the first bar on its Kocks Reducing & Sizing Block for large bar dimensions in its advanced greenfield medium bar mill line. The project follows a previous finishing block installation with Kocks several years ago.

The role of fluoropolymers and purity testing of material An interview with Dr Michael Schlipf

What does the planned restriction of PFAS (fluoropolymers) in Germany/Europe mean for manufacturers and processors? Manufacturers of fluoropolymers in Europe are reducing their product portfolio or discontinuing the production of fluoropolymers completely. Half of the fluoropolymers required in Europe will then have to be imported, which will drastically increase the dependency of the high technology positioned in Europe on imports from abroad. Europe has comparatively high safety and environmental standards for production facilities. The imported high-performance materials do not achieve the usual level of quality and purity in all respects. The local shortage of raw materials is expected to lead to an increase in prices, which will put European industry at a further competitive disadvantage. What significance does inspection and sorting technology currently have in the production and processing of fluoropolymers? Fluoropolymers are primarily used in demanding applications such as medical technology, the semiconductor industry and high-frequency technology as well as the food and beverage industry. The highest standards of purity and

Dr Michael Schlipf, member of the board and chairman of the fluoropolymer group of pro-K Industrieverband of semi-finished and consumer products made of plastic eV, recently visited Sikora. In an interview, he highlighted the role of fluoropolymers and the procedures for testing the purity of these materials. What role do fluoropolymers play in the new megatrends such as e-mobility, 5G data transmission, green hydrogen or meeting the goals of the EU’s Green Deal? Due to their special property profile, fluoropolymers are the basis for all of the megatrends mentioned. In electric cars, they are mainly used in batteries, but also in electronics as functional and safety components. 5G data transmission takes place via antennas made of CCL (copper-clad laminates), a composite of copper foil, PTFE or FEP foil and PTFE-coated glass fabric. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysing water using electricity from wind or solar energy. The membranes in the electrolysis cells are made of fluorine ionomers. Replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen makes a significant contribution to achieving the goals of the Green Deal.

quality apply to these applications. Manufacturing processes can be very complex – the greater the damage in the event of contaminated end products. This is why inspection and sorting technology plays an important role before the pellets are processed. How do you see the future development of the industry in terms of material purity testing? We are currently in a phase of disproportionate growth in the volume of fluoropolymers. This is because most innovative megatrends are based on the use of fluoropolymers. As these new applications place high demands on fluoropolymers in terms of purity and quality, it is already clear that quality enhancing production steps such as purity testing will continue to develop at a disproportionately high rate. Sikora AG www.sikora.net very passionate to have our home in the Black Country, and to be named as its Manufacturing Champion by the Express & Star is a massive honour. “Importantly, it reinforces the culture we have built and that is very much about our people, who all own a part of our business. Meeting electrical insulation challenges with PEEK extrusion

towards electrical insulation through plastic extrusion is gaining momentum. The latest electric motors require higher power and energy density, accommodating up to 1,000V. performance, motor windings are now insulated with advanced plastic materials such as polyether ether ketone (PEEK), which offers enhanced insulating properties and chemical resistance, and can operate at temperatures up to 240°C. Its flexibility, compared to conventional enamelling, allows the creation of tighter bending radii. Combined with reduced insulation thickness, this increases energy density. For the past decade, Frigeco has been developing extrusion lines dedicated to the production of PEEK-coated cables for oil pumps, giving the company extensive experience in processing this material. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the production of insulated magnet wire, including both PEEK and PPSU (polyphenylsulphone). To achieve optimal

MFL Group provides a complete range of machinery for wire and cable manufac turers. The group has gained know-now and experience in the industry in recent years through the acquisition of three companies – CM Caballé, OM Lesmo and Eurodraw Energy – that complement its strengths and add intellectual property into its wire and cable division. In 2022, MFL Group’s machinery offering was expanded through the acquisition of Coseco, which specialises in lines for electrolytic coating of copper wire (tinning, silvering, etc). Frigeco is one of the two brands created within MFL Group. Its origins date back to the late 1990s, and over the last 20 years it has consolidated its position as a brand for rod breakdown lines, intermediate drawing lines, multi-wire drawing lines, rotating machinery, and wire and cable extrusion lines. In response to growing demand for high-performance electric vehicles, the transition in magnet wire production

MFL has gained proficiency in PEEK extrusion

MFL states that its acquired proficiency demonstrates its expert management of the crystalline phase of the material, achieving minimal insulation thickness and increasing adhesion capacity to the conductor. The company supplies machinery that covers the entire spectrum of insulated magnet wire production in PEEK, from the initial rod breakdown machine to the final extrusion stage. The company is planning to establish a testing extrusion line for PEEK operation at its facility in Spinetoli, Italy. It is also developing polypropylene insulation for medium voltage cables. High-capacity hot strip mill commissioned By rolling the first hot strip, SMS has put into operation the new high-capacity hot strip mill (HSM) at Jindal Steel Odisha Ltd (JSOL), a subsidiary of the OP Jindal Group. transfer bar cooling system; Hibox® heat preservation hoods; mandrel-less coil box; edge heating equipment; drum shear; secondary descaler; a seven-stand finishing mill; laminar cooling; and three down coilers. SMS’s AMOVA integrated business unit supplied a coil con- veying system, coil-strapping machines, marking machine and an inspection line.

thin strips can be rolled reliably and stably by implementation of various innovative rolling technologies. For optimal temperature regulation in the roughing mill, SMS installed the newly developed transfer bar cooling system, which prevents uncontrolled air cooling during oscillation. By equalising the temperature, product homogeneity is improved. The Hibox heat preservation hoods simplify inspection and maintenance. The heat panels make the finishing train’s rolling behaviour more stable, and JSOL is able to shift the product mix toward smaller final thicknesses and/or higher strength steel grades. Arranged between the second roughing stand and the finishing mill, the mandrel-less coil box forms transfer bar into coils, and equalises the temperature over the transfer bar length. Coiling the transfer bar prevents the inner windings from cooling. Material and heat are accumulated, providing a positive effect on the material to be rolled. The edge heater, located upstream of the finishing mill descaler, utilises inductive heating. Its primary role is to enhance strip edge quality by maintaining optimal pre rolling temperatures. The seven-stand finishing mill is equipped with hydraulic adjustment systems, hydraulic loopers and the latest CVC® plus (continuously variable crown) combined work roll shifting and bending systems.

SMS implemented the HSM in JSOL’s Angul works in the Indian federal state of Odisha. While it is the first hot strip mill at this location, SMS has previously supplied several metallurgical plants to the Indian steel producer. In 2021, JSOL placed the order with SMS for the erection of the 1,780mm HSM, to be equipped with advanced hot strip production technologies, especially in the rolling of hot strip to thin final gauges. SMS’s main scope of equipment included the primary descaler; roughing stand No.1 in two-high design with attached edger; roughing stand No.2 in four high design, also with attached edger;

In the roughing mill section, slabs up to 12m in length, with a thickness range from 180 to 260mm and a width range from 800 to 1,680mm, are rolled down to transfer bar thickness. The range of hot strip thicknesses is 1.2 to 20mm. In total, JSOL’s HSM is designed for an annual capacity of five million tons. The range of steel grades that can be processed includes sophisticated grades such as HSLA, pipe grades and silicon steels. The share of harder material grades is more than 20 per cent. Very
