Urban forest developed on Nooriabad industrial estate
Pakistan Cables Ltd has established an industrial urban forest, spread across 2.5 acres – home to approximately 40,000 trees. Planting commenced in 2019 at the site of the new Pakistan Cables factory, which is under construction in Nooriabad. Based on a proven method of urban forestation from Japan and developed by Akira Miyawaki, the development has been implemented by Shahzad Qureshi in Pakistan. Kamal A Chinoy, executive director at Pakistan Cables, who has been spearheading the initiative, shared his views at a media briefing: “It’s imperative that as an industry we work towards uplifting the living standards of our planet. Urban forests promote a healthier environment and most importantly environmental education among the public at large. “By developing the urban forest in an industrial estate, we hope to inspire Re-using dies Ajex & Turner has developed a vertical tungsten carbide die polishing and re-grinding machine. The air-cooled model TCD-11 has a working range of 0.6 to 50mm. Re-polishing and re-sizing allows dies to be re-used, in some cases for years. The new machine is useful for welding wire, and low- and high-carbon wire drawing units, to save time with the regular use of old dies. The estimated processing times for a die of up to 5mm are 15-20 minutes for shaping, and 20-25 minutes for polishing. The times for a 5-10mm die are 20-30 minutes shaping and 30-40 minutes polishing; and for a 10-15mm die, 30-60 minutes shaping and 45-120 minutes polishing. The machine runs on an electrical spindle at 24,000 rpm, with stroke length for wire dies of 0 to 30mm. It operates on a principal where both the reduction and the bearing zones of the die can be worked in one setting,
others to step forward and join us in giving back to our planet.” Fifty-nine indigenous species are planted in the Pakistan Cables Urban Forest, some of which include amla, anar, amaltas, barna, injeer, mango and mulberry. Mr Qureshi commented, “These forests require minimum care, commitment and knowledge. Miyawaki’s technique makes the trees grow ten times faster than in nature, creating a self- sustaining forest within two to three years.” The urban forest is designed as a self- sustaining eco system. According to experts, forests typically take one hundred years to mature. Urban forests grown using the Miyawaki technique are 30 times as dense and 100 times more bio-diverse. Fahd K Chinoy, CEO of Pakistan Cables Ltd, said, “As a responsible corporate citizen, giving back to the society is an inherent part of our approach.
“To build on this further we have taken a bold step by successfully establishing an urban forest for the first time in an industrial concern. “What is most encouraging is that we have been able to transform the arid surroundings of Nooriabad into a lush and vibrant forest.” Pakistan Cables Ltd www.pakistancables.com ❍ (From left) Kamal A Chinoy, Mustapha A Chinoy (chairman) and Fahd K Chinoy at the urban forest site
