The long-awaited return of wire India, which takes place in Mumbai from 23 to 25 November, is highlighted in this issue of Wire & Cable ASIA. Exhibitor descriptions can be found spread throughout the issue, clearly identified with the exhibition logo. The opening up of exhibitions has been a welcome feature of 2022, with many countries again playing host to the staging of traditional shows, providing not only the opportunity to expand technical knowledge, but to renew acquaintances, new and old, that have been nurtured over many years. After such an absence, it also provides a perfect chance to explore new projects that are impacting on our industry worldwide. The strengthening of relationships is highlighted on page 10 as Germany-based lune and Unitek Japan once again agreed to continue their partnership after meeting at this year’s wire exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany. lune, a supplier of in-line contact-free temperature measurement systems, sees the Japanese market as a core part of its strategy and has teamed up with Unitek, a supplier to the country’s cable and wire producing industry, which represents some of the country’s major European brands. Continuing the theme of Europe/Asia relationships, Tenova and SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation have entered into a partnership for Consteel Evolution, a low-impact technology for steel manufacturing. It will be the first of its kind in the Philippines and will be employed in SteelAsia’s new melt shop in 2024 in Batangas. Full details on page 19. UK-based AEI Cables has been awarded a contract to supply fire performance and low voltage cables for a major expansion of the United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong.

Rosendahl Nextrom GmbH With environmental regulations set to in crease in the future, production compa nies will need to document their process es and carbon emissions accurately and present this information when required. Determining the exact CO 2 consumption of a production line can be simplified using Rosendahl’s latest smart solution. The recently introduced ESG module (environment social governance) is the latest add-on for the Rio line control. It combines precise calculations and in-line The joint project, taking place within the framework of the pan-European IPCEI (Important Projects of Common Euro pean Interest) process, entails the pro duction of green hydrogen at a 60 MW industrial electrolysis plant using electric ity from renewable sources and deionised water. The green hydrogen will be used to produce fertilisers, melamine and technical nitrogen at Borealis operations in Linz, Austria. The oxygen generated by water splitting in the course of the electrolysis process will be used directly
measuring devices to continuously log the consumption data of electrical power, water, compressed air and all raw materials consumed during production, and converts this data into kilograms of CO 2 . Customers will have access to accurate figures depicting their carbon emissions in real-time, and will know how much CO 2 their production runs emit. Ready-to-use reports show the carbon emissions of a whole line set-up, or of single machines or in production. The electrolyser will also provide grid services for the transmission network. The electrolysis plant is scheduled to commence operation in 2025, withprojected annual CO 2 emissions reductions of up to 90,000 tons. “Green hydrogen is a crucial lever in driving the energy transition,” said Verbund CEO Michael Strugl. “One of our strategic goals is to establish Verbund as a key hydrogen player. As a partner to industry, we are implementing joint projects that contribute to the C 131

SMS group records highest order intake for ten years
Burkhard Dahmen, CEO of SMS group, said, “Almost all industrialised countries have set themselves ambitious climate targets and resolved transformation strategies for their steel industries. Today, integrated steelworks produce around 1.3bn tons of crude steel per year via the conventional BF-BOF route, accounting for 90 per cent of all CO 2 emissions from the steel industry. In the decades to come, these production capacities will be subject to transformation. As a systems supplier, we are in a position to support our customers comprehensively in every situation.” In addition to supplying solutions and systems to the steel industry, SMS develops technologies that enable the recovery and reuse of nearly all types metals. In November 2021, a long term strategic partnership agreement was concluded with copper producer Aurubis, covering the development and construction of several modular recycling plants in Europe and North America. These plants will recover metals such as
With an 86 per cent increase, SMS group almost doubled its order intake to reach €3,507mn in the 2021 financial year, recording its highest level in ten years. The reasons for the rise are the catch up effects in the wake of the previous year’s slump triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing demand for decarbonisation and recycling technologies. The group experienced an increase in the order backlog. Due to delays caused by the pandemic in the schedules for acceptance, the 2021 financial year closed with sales down 6.8 per cent from the previous year. Earnings before taxes (EBT) amounted to €87mn. This result returns SMS to a post-pandemic situation of profitable growth. With the acquisition of the remaining shares of Paul Wurth in April 2021, SMS further strengthened its position as technology partner and full-line supplier for the steel industry.
