Record visitor numbers for booming Southeast Asia For an idea of how important Southeast Asia is to the wire and cable industry, you really have to look little further than the biennial staging of wire Southeast Asia in Bangkok, Thailand. The industry as a whole is going through somewhat of a prolonged boom in the region, highlighted by anticipated infrastructure spending of some €524bn by 2020 in just four countries – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. “Thailand is considered to be the central springboard to the up-and-coming markets of Southeast Asia due to a boom in the building, energy and automotive sector,” said Friedrich-Georg Kehrer, global portfolio director for metals and flow technologies, of exhibition organisers Messe Düsseldorf. That was certainly backed up by a record number of visitors to the BITEC Centre in Bangkok, with more than 8,400 attending from 50 countries. This equates to a 20 per cent rise in visitors from the previous staging in 2015. The appeal of the region was also highlighted by the number of visiting companies from outside the region. From the 400 leading industry names from 30 different countries, 95 per cent came from

outside Thailand, with country groups from Austria, China, Germany, Italy, Taiwan, UK and USA. Our review of the exhibition starts on page 46.

❍ A Tenova colour coating line at SSSC in Vietnam Done deal for new Vietnam steel site

rolling speed of 1,400m/min with automatic gauge, flatness control systems and multi-zone cooling. The hot dip galvanising line will be equipped with Tenova’s own air knife system, offering a complete in-house technological package. The plant will be full operative by the end of 2018 and will allow Pomina 2 to enter into the production of flat products for the domestic and external market. Tenova was awarded this contract following past projects realised for the Pomina Group for steel making, including two Consteel ® EAFs, Tenova proprietary technology, and numerous successful references earned in Vietnam. The project includes a push-pull pickling line with acid regeneration plant, a six-high cold reversing mill, a roll grinder, a hot dip galvanising line and a colour coating line. The envisaged total production is 375,000 t/year of high quality pre-painted galvanised and cold rolled coils, with the provision for future expansion to almost double the capacity. The incoming hot-rolled strip has a width up to 1,250mm with thickness from 1.6 to 4mm. The output strip will have a thickness ranging from 3 to 0.2mm. The cold rolling mill and the hot dip galvanising line have been designed to offer the client the most up-to-date technological solutions in the market. The cold rolling mill has a maximum

An insight into Niehoff at CRU conference

Maschinenfabrik Niehoff, an international manufacturer and supplier of wire and cable machinery, supported the 11 th CRU Wire & Cable Conference, held in July in Munich, Germany. The conference offered over 30 presentations. The Niehoff contribution explained “How a machine manufacturer is reacting to the ever-changing market environment and offering benefits for energy cable producers”. One of the highlights of the CRU event was a journey to the Niehoff headquarters in Schwabach to visit the new plant and some of its facilities. The plant was built from 2008 to 2016 and is equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment. GIMAX – which will be exhibiting at Iran Wire in December – has redesigned its wet drawing equipment, and the traditional submerged drawing tank has evolved into the TRS range of non-slip wet drawing units with independently driven vertical

capstans, combining most of the benefits of a dry drawing line with a wet one. The TRS is a spray type wet drawbench, where the lubricant is sprayed onto the die and die box and onto the capstan. This range is suitable for both ferrous and non-ferrous wires and its reduced footprint, easily accessible parts and components not only offer cost savings in terms of floor space and labour (operation and maintenance), but are also an important aid in decreasing downtime and consequently increasing productivity. High productivity and a better final wire quality coupled with features such as perfect alignment of wire between die and capstan as well as low energy consumption due to an electronic control of motor and line operation go to ensure an advanced drawing solution. The main features are: • Reduced die and capstan wear • Mechanical line speed reaches 33m/second • Fixed or rotating dies • Rotating die speed varies in proportion to line speed • Each block can be bypassed • Synchronisation by means of dancer arm • Input wire diameter starts at 2mm (steel wire) or 3mm with aluminium wire The redesign also led to the introduction of a range of TRD dry drawing equipment, available with vertically or horizontally mounted capstans – non-slip (with independently driven capstans), tilted horizontal capstans, rotating dies, water-cooled capstans, etc. The capstan diameter can vary from 300mm to 1,200mm depending on the application and diameter of wire, and can reach a line speed of 35ms/second. Ribbon cutting at new expansion

DAVIS-STANDARD president and CEO Jim Murphy welcomed Connecticut Governor Dannel P Malloy, Department of Economic Community Development (DECD) Commissioner Catherine Smith, Connecticut State Representative Diana Urban, Connecticut State Senator Heather Somers, Stonington Second Selectman Mike Spellman and more than 400 employees to celebrate the completion of a 15,000ft 2 addition to Davis-Standard’s facility in Pawcatuck, Connecticut, USA. A ribbon cutting ceremony followed by facility tours commemorated the occasion. The new space houses manufacturing and precision machining of advanced multi-layer blown film dies, enabling Davis-Standard to move all blown film manufacturing from Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Pawcatuck. “The facility addition is the culmination of our vision to bring world-class blown film die production to Pawcatuck,” said Mr Murphy. “All Davis-Standard blown film die technology is now integrated under one roof, making us one of the largest manufacturers of seven- to 11-layer blown film dies in the world. “These dies are used for making highly technical multi-layer films used in packaging and pharmaceutical applications, which are high-demand markets for us. “We are grateful to Governor Malloy, Commissioner Smith, Representative Urban, Senator Formica, Senator Somers and Stonington First Selectman Rob Simmons for their support in making this possible.” Davis-Standard has operated in Southeast Connecticut since 1848 and is one of the oldest employers in the Southeast Connecticut, Southwest Rhode Island region. Chinese order for four forging lines

AUTOMOTIVE supplier Chongqing Lianhao Technology from China has ordered four mechanical forging lines from Schuler. The multi-station mechanical presses with link drive have a press force between 8,000 and 20,000 kilonewtons. “We have to thank our sales department in Weingarten for the acquisition of this order,” said Markus Bieg, head of the industry division in Weingarten, Germany. “Our colleagues here will also be responsible for the technical aspects of the product and design of the system. This demonstrates how important this site is for the Schuler Group.” Manufacturing and assembly will take place at the Göppingen and Erfurt sites, also in Germany. The delivery of the four forging lines is planned to take place in the course of the first half of 2018. Due to the large stroke range of 250 to 800mm, presses of the type MML2 with link drive, which are optionally available with ServoDirect technology, are suitable for the mass production of drive and chassis components in a large variety of sizes – from bevel gears to transmission shafts. The link kinematics reduce the forming speed, thereby increasing both the quality of the parts and the formability of the material. The link drive system of the MML2 developed by Schuler can be optimally adapted to the respective component requirements during the design of the press and permits use for both cold and warm forging. “Economical manufacturing of parts in large volumes is only possible by optimal coordination of the equipment, process technology know-how, and tool technology,” Mr Bieg said. “At Schuler, this knowledge is combined with years of experience. FOR data cable installers and technicians buying or using a cable certifier, it is important to choose a care plan which provides a low cost of ownership while helping to reduce downtime. To give installers complete protection from unforeseen costs, Ideal Networks has launched the new Sapphire Care Plan which helps minimise costs and maximise productivity when using LanTEK II/III cable certifiers. In order to guarantee a low cost of ownership, selected replaceable wear parts are free with the Sapphire Care Plan. Installers can choose one replacement parts package every year, with options including permanent link adapter tips, CAT6A reference patch cords, CAT6/5e channel adapters, CAT6A channel adapters or batteries for the LanTEK II/III. To maintain accuracy and compliance with international technical standards, such as ISO IEC 61935-1 and TIA 1152, annual calibration is also included at no extra cost, alongside any software and firmware updates. To make sure productivity is not disrupted during calibration, a loan unit is delivered on the same day that the LanTEK II/III is collected. The new plan offers a comprehensive support package, specially designed to help installers and technicians to manage costs by protecting against the expense of unforeseen repairs. In the unlikely event that repair is needed, both the LanTEK II/III cable certifier and any accessories are covered for standard repairs within the cost of the plan. To avoid downtime and delays during repair, as part of the Sapphire Care Plan, a loan tester is despatched within one working day of a fault being reported. New production line for compounds

DURING the summer break Fainplast has installed a new production line for HFFR (halogen-free flame-retardant) compounds crosslinkable with the SIOPLAS method (XLPO-HFFR), also known as HFX. For this new line, included in its 2017-2020 investment plan, Fainplast expects complete saturation of production capacity within year 2018, with an expected increase of sales turnover of €10m in this specific product segment. The total amount of investments scheduled by Fainplast for 2017 is approximately €3m. In addition to the new HFX line, at the end of 2017 the installation of a new compounding line of the brand EVAtech will be completed. The Fainplast HFX compounds, which are developed in its R&D laboratories and produced with innovative technology, are shipped worldwide to some of the most reputable cable manufacturers for the production of high temperature cable or solar cables. What made this system unique was the development of the AF80-12000-2 annealer. The AF-Series heats by means of the Joule effect. Heating occurs in two phases: pre-heating and heating. At the end of the annealing process, the wire is cooled with coolant and is then dried with compressed air before it reaches the coiler or spooler.

The annealer shafts have been specially designed to minimise maintenance and to optimise accessibility. There are four annealer motor driven shafts, three of which are electrified. This 12,000 amp, twin-wire annealer is capable of handling 2 x 1.8-4.5mm from 8mm input to the rod breakdown and 1 x 4.5-6.2mm from 8mm or 12mm rod input. In addition, it can process trapezoidal conductors up to 35mm 2 from 8 or 12mm rod input and flat wire 7mm x 2.5mm to 9mm x 3mm from 12.9mm rod input. Quality inspection on drawing line ❍ On-line wire inspection with eddy current system

CONTRÔLE Mesure Systèmes has developed a special version of its eddy current rotating head, RotoETscan HV, suitable for line drawing inspection for a diameter range of 0.8 to 10mm. This system, which is easy to install on the production line, integrates a turntable (cassette) adapted to the product diameter. Eddy current probes (two or four) installed inside the cassette rotate at high speed (18,000rpm) around the wire, while the product translates into the rotating head. The nozzles inside the system ensure proper centring of the wire during inspection. Connected to the EC instrument Zet@Master, it detects longitudinal defects >50μm on the product, but can also be combined with other CMS equipment, such as magnetising or demagnetising units, for a complete product inspection. THE Upcast ® upward casting concept of copper rod was invented in 1968 at Outokumpu’s plant in Pori, Finland. Since then many new developments have taken place and systematically the technology has been further developed to always meet the current requirements of the customers and markets. Today’s Upcast process is simple and reliable with easy operation through an advanced control system resulting a low lifecycle cost. The majority of delivered Upcast lines are for Cu-OF rod and mainly with the most common cast rod diameter of 8mm. Rods with larger diameters are used for manufacturing a variety of finished products, eg bus-bars, shaped profiles, trolley wires, electroplating anodes, etc. Cu-OF rod, with its formability, is well suited for all electrical applications. There are customers all over the world casting with this technology the Cu-OF 8mm rod, which can be further processed to the finest diameters of wires.

With the consistent and systematic research and development in the company’s own modern Pilot Plant, the casting speed has increased and the capacity of the lines has become bigger and the production more cost effective, more rod diameter sizes are possible and the lines operate safely and reliably for years. The most important alloys under testing are currently CuMg0.5, ZnAl15 and various brass alloys. CuMg has excellent strength and conductivity characteristics, which create several possibilities for its applications, such as contact wires for high-speed trains and harnesses for the automotive industry. Upcast has already cast the largest diameters of CuMg0.5 and the rod has been processed and the finished wire fulfils the requirements of the EN 50149 standard. In addition, Ø 8mm CuMg0.5 cast rod has been successfully produced and further processed into very thin wires suitable for automotive industry. With the cast diameter of Ø 8mm the process into the finished product is shorter and thus also more cost effective. ZnAl alloy is used in the arc and flame spraying process for corrosion protection. The very fine ZnAl wire is led into the spraying gun where it melts and is then sprayed onto steel surface, forming a

Schleuniger introduces Mercury-4 laser wire stripper

SCHLEUNIGER, an international manufacturer of wire processing equipment, has introduced the Mercury-4 laser wire stripping mac- hine. The Mercury-4 is a powerful and slim bench-top laser stripping machine that can process wires and shielded cables ranging in size from 0.025 to 6mm OD (0.001"– 0.2").
