Indian cable gets the go-ahead
Civic officials said a number of Internet-based facilities are in prospect, including paperless building permissions, GPS tagging, monitoring properties and tree geotagging. A centralised traffic management system, CCTV network, smart street lighting and centralised control rooms are to be established in the city, for which high speed Internet will be necessary. THE standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal to lay 2,300km of fibre optic cable. “The network is not only useful for the civic body, but also for the citizens. They will be able to get better connectivity and Internet services with this network. It will also provide a new income source to the civic administration,” said Kunal Kumar, commissioner of PMC. The cables will be laid through ducts at the roadside. The civic body has to provide a number of services which are Internet based. If PMC develops its own network it will reduce the financial burden on the civic body. As per PMC officials, tenders for creating the ducts have already been issued. Private companies will use the ducts for augmenting their Internet and mobile telephone service, and the civic body will utilise the same infrastructure to build its own cable network.
