High-speed data transmission for medical applications

Xtra • Guard – offering high performance from Alpha Wire International ▲

Alpha Wire International, a supplier of advanced solutions and service in wire, cable and tubing, has announced that its dedicated range of high- performance cables, Xtra • Guard ® , has been designed to provide effective and reliable performance, with the medical sector in mind. Modern complex control systems incorporate higher transmission and switching speeds, and require a new generation of performance cable that is designed to perform in this demanding environment. Xtra • Guard 1 is a high performing cable designed for internal or external electronic wiring applications. It fea- tures a unique premium grade PVC insulation jacket that gives prolonged life and endurance characteristics because of its toughness and flame and moisture resistance. Similarly, the Xtra • Guard high-flex mini- diameter data cable has been designed to give extremely high performance in applications where a single flex or continuous rolling motion is to be endured. The cable has been tested to six million flex life cycles, to ensure that it is able to perform in the most demanding flexing environments. The perfectly round geometry of the cable ensures a liquid tight installation, and the premium grade PVC jacket enables easier routing of the cable, especially in tight spaces, making it

suitable for machines and equipment that require cabling to be routed through C-tracks. For maximum cable performance, Suprashield ® deploys a tinned copper braid, a drain wire and a tri-laminate aluminium foil designed to offer the most complete protection against electrical noise across the full frequency range. For flexible cable applications, Alpha’s Suprashield Flex ® shielding system combines a double jacket construction with a high coverage (85%) tinned copper braid to ensure the maximum signal protection in EMC intensive environments, while maintaining the desired flexing characteristics of the cable. Mr Harry Quinn, European sales manager for Alpha Wire International, commented, “Selecting the correct cables for critical applications is essential to overall system reliability, performance and safety. “It’s also crucial that this selection is made from the outset to avoid cable failure, which could be disastrous for equipment such as MRI scanners where mistakes are just not an option.”
