“Plug and print” in SAP shop floor environments SAP ERP systems are used worldwide, with a key role in the efficient organisation of supply chain processes. Industrial printer specialist Leibinger is offering SAP users greater convenience, security and efficiency when connecting printers to SAP Shop Floor. In collaboration with the SAP digitalisation experts at 4IoT GmbH, the SAP Shop Floor Connect add-on has been expanded to include a Leibinger printer library, enabling all Leibinger printers to be connected to SAP Plug & Play in a standard application.

The SAP add-on can be obtained from Leibinger with immediate effect, and the connection of Leibinger printers is free of charge. If additional guidance and support is required, Leibinger offers a special support package in collaboration with 4IoT GmbH, including integration, training and extended telephone support for SAP users. This offer is initially only valid for Europe due to the binding support times. 4IoT GmbH managing director Stefan Rössel commented on the integration project: “We are experts in automation, digitalisation and maximum security in the SAP environment and have extensively tested the interface. It has never been so easy, secure and reliable for SAP users to seamlessly integrate industrial printers into their SAP Shop Floor world. The collaboration with the Leibinger team is extremely productive for everyone involved.” Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co KG www.leibinger-group.com Specifying OS and OM fibre for projects When determining fibre optic cables such as those from Proterial Cable America (PCA) for a project, labels including OS1, OS2, OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5 will appear. These labels are fibre optic cable designations that originated in the international ISO/IEC 11801 standard. The ISO/IEC 11801 standard refers to international requirements for designing, installing and managing structured cabling systems in customer premises. OS levels refer to single-mode optical fibre cables, while OM levels apply to multi-mode optical fibre cables. OS1 is usually tight-buffered and commonly used indoors, while OS2 applies to higher-performing, low-water peak single-mode glass. OS2 is a loose-tube design and can be used outdoors. OM1 indicates standard 62.5/125 micron multimode glass. OM2 is standard 50/125 micron glass. Both OM1 and OM2 use an LED for light transmission but OM2 can handle higher bandwidth. Both OM1 and OM2 are typically used to extend legacy private networks. OM3 is for enhanced 50/125 micron glass capable of support ing 10 Gb Ethernet over distances up to 300m and with higher speeds at shorter distances. It is optimised with a laser light source (VCSEL), which makes it capable of supporting higher speeds. OM4 is for enhanced 50/125 micron glass cable capable of supporting 10 Gb Ethernet over distances up to 550m. OM3 and OM4 are used in parallel optic protocols, which typically use four fibres in each direction to achieve higher speed links. OM5 is also for 50/125 micron glass cable, and can transmit 40 100 Gb, but can send multiple signals on one fibre over four different wavelengths, which means it can consolidate fibre use over a distance of 150m. OS levels are suitable for long distances while delivering information successfully. OM levels can have issues such as interference and signal loss, but use less heat and are cheaper. Michael Wöhrmann, director of business development at Leibinger, said, “This represents a significant advantage for our customers, as Leibinger printers can now be integrated into the SAP world much more quickly and efficiently. With this work as a foundation, essential customer printer-related business processes can be automated. All printer data and messages are directly available. For instance, automated order releases or production feedback into the SAP system are conceivable. All printer data and messages are directly available.” Leibinger customers who use SAP now benefit from a clearly organised dashboard where they can view all status data, error messages and process data, including consumables levels (ink and solvents). The interface can be operated in the cloud via the Leibinger Connect portal as well as on-premises. Leibinger’s latest flagship product, the IQJET, provides an OPC UA interface for the on-premises connection – especially suitable for sensitive industries such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, security and defence.
