AI leads demand for high quality data cables The demand for high quality data cables is growing exponentially – led, no doubt, by the huge investment in AI data centres worldwide. And with that comes standard-setting quality requirements for the cables. It has been sufficient in the past to control the diameter to the nominal value, but variations in a wide range of parameters of these cables can cause reflections during data transmission. Some of the Sikora devices in the Laser, Centerview and Capitance ranges measure diameter and eccentricity values with high single-value precision, allowing deviations and scatter of the nominal values to be recorded precisely. Turn to page 23 for the full story. As if to highlight the international flavour of Wire & Cable ASIA , French company Condat – following the successful launch of its new plant in China’s Shandong province – has finalised the acquisition of Chinese company ShuangQi/Gaosen. The deal strengthens the wire drawing lubricant manufacturer’s presence in the Chinese market, and Condat is also enhancing its product range, particularly in the steel cord segment. Meeting the exacting standards for this cable on a permanent basis requires continuous monitoring of the performance of the extrusion process.

ShuangQi/Gaosen is a specialist in the formulation and manufacture of sodium soaps, and its range will further complement Condat’s range. See page 16 for full details.

MAC‘s 105ft ultrasonic- and eddy-current-equipped NDT system with automated material handling at RGM’s plant in Illinois, USA

Partnership to ensure high-quality rod and bar

tables, with no size adjustment needed. MAC’s EZ drop rollers place the bar on the conveyor channel rolls, where it moves smoothly through the testers. On the output side, tested bars are automatically sorted into accept or reject. Each accepted bar is lifted by sorting rollers and moved to an intermediate station to be raised by alignment rollers. The MAC Aligner unit, designed for this installation, pushes the end of the bar to line it up correctly before it is released onto the accumulation table and into the accept pocket, making bundling easier. Stops can be activated to accumulate bars while the pocket is emptied, without stopping the testing. A new calibration station was designed to hold and feed the reference bars used to verify that tests are operating within specifications. A simple button press moves the bar from the calibration support station to MAC EZ drop rollers that catch the bar and lower it onto the inlet conveyor, where it is automatically fed through the testers, reversed and returned to the station. typically set up on 0.1" depth notches. To optimise the accuracy of the eddy current test, a demagnetiser removes existing magnetic fields in the bars that might counteract the fields induced by the eddy current probes during the test. For the detection of internal flaws, the Echomac® FD-6 eight-channel ultrasonic electronics and 100mm rotary were selected. Ultrasonic transducer test signals can penetrate the entire bar, allowing 100 per cent volumetric inspection to detect core internal flaws such as cracks, voids and inclusions, as well as some surface flaws. The rotary head mechanism spins the transducer elements and water couplant at speeds of up to 2,400 rpm around the bar as it is fed through the test. The transducers are housed in holders that facilitate set-up for different sized materials. Special attention was paid to the design of the automated handling system to prevent back-ups or jams, while promoting efficiency and accuracy. A conductor PLC with HMI touchscreen controls all operations including rotary testers, triple guides, the bench, conveyors, sorting, marking and alarms. Bars ranging from 20 to 100mm diameter are loaded from the input

Round Ground Metal (RGM), a producer of close-tolerance round rod and bar, and NDT specialist Magnetic Analysis Corporation (MAC) have collaborated to create a fully automated system that enables efficient, high-quality testing of stock for use in industries such as aero space, heavy equipment, energy and medical. Together, RGM and MAC designed a system that incorporates both eddy current and ultrasonic technologies to test cold-finished carbon steel, alloy and stainless rod and bars. Now installed by MAC, the massive system – more than 100-feet long overall – can test rods and bars ranging from 3.66 to 12.8m long (12 to 42ft) and 19.05 to 88.9mm in diameter (0.75" to 3.5") at speeds of up to 45.72mpm (150 fpm). MAC’s 350 Rotomac® is used in this installation for detecting longitudinal, seam-type defects, including cracks, pits and laps. Operating at 150ft per minute, this rotary can detect defects as short as 0.4" and, depending on material quality, defects smaller than 0.004" deep. At RGM, the current mill operation for uninterrupted testing flow is 120 fpm,

Optimising the durability and wear monitoring of a blast furnace ROGESA (Roheisengesellschaft Saar GmbH) in Dillingen, Germany, has commissioned SMS group to carry out a comprehensive modernisation of a blast furnace, to extend its service life and ensure effective monitoring of the hearth lining. The contract includes the planning and delivery of the Paul Wurth hearth lining and multi thermocouple sensor probes (MTPs), as well as technical support during the installation phase. The required upgrade is based on measurements taken in 2023, which indicated that the wear on the hearth of the facility’s blast furnace 4 is more advanced than expected, and that the remaining wall thickness is approaching the wear limit. Blast furnace 4, built in the late 1970s, was enlarged and re lined by Paul Wurth in 2003. It has a usable volume of 2,460m 3 and an output of 6,400 tons per day. The last reline on the blast furnace took place in 2016. For the new furnace lining, SMS plans to use Paul Wurth hearth lining technology, including carbon blocks, ceramic cups and refractory materials, which are known for their durability and reliability. Well-designed equipment offers thermal insulation by maintaining the extremely high temperatures required for iron ore reduction. In addition, it offers corrosion resistance by avoiding chemical attacks from molten iron and slag, and structural support by withstanding mechanical stresses and maintaining the furnace’s shape. The multi thermocouple sensor probes are designed to precisely determine and track hearth lining wear, ensuring enhanced monitoring and operational efficiency.

Blast furnace 4 at ROGESA, as viewed from the water treatment plant

The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025, with a shutdown time of only 55 days. It is the latest undertaking in a long-standing relationship between SMS group and ROGESA, with previous collaborations focusing on hot blast stoves and refractory-related projects. Martina Engelmann, project manager at SMS group in Germany, commented, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with ROGESA on this important project. Our advanced hearth lining technology enables ROGESA to extend the life of their furnace, operate them more safely, and prevent forced shutdowns. After the big re-line in 2003, it makes us proud to continue collaborating here in Dillingen.” Dr Jürgen Hochhaus, operations manager of the blast furnace department at ROGESA, added, “We greatly appreciate SMS group in Germany for their flexibility and prompt responsiveness to our requests, which were critical to the success of this project. Their expert solutions, particularly their expertise in hearth lining and multi thermocouple sensor probes, ensure the durability and safety of our operations.” SMS group GmbH ROGESA www.sms-group.com www.rogesa.de

Feasibility study for floating solar project in Malaysia

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) has signed a joint study agreement with Malaysia’s Sarawak Energy and clean energy solutions provider Gentari, to assess the feasibility of a floating solar power plant at the reservoir of the Murum Hydroelectric Plant in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. The large-scale floating solar PV project marks a significant step towards expanding renewable energy capacity in Sarawak state and supporting Malaysia’s clean energy ambitions. The exchange of documents was held at Masdar’s head office in Abu Dhabi, between the three chief executive officers – Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi (Masdar), Datuk Sharbini Suhaili (Sarawak Energy Group) and Sushil Purohit (Gentari). Floating solar projects offer several advantages for countries like Malaysia, with growing populations and a scarcity of land that is required for agriculture, housing and industry. Placing solar plants on water reduces land use, decreases water evaporation and offers potential synergies with hydroelectric operations. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said, “Our partnership with Sarawak Energy and Gentari represents a powerful convergence of expertise and ambition in the pursuit of a sustainable energy future. By harnessing our collective strengths in renewable energy technologies, particularly in large-scale solar and floating PV innovations, we are demonstrating that we can accelerate the energy transition and drive economic growth through bold, collaborative action. This deal follows our landmark agreement with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority in 2023 for the development of ten gigawatts of clean energy projects across the country. Masdar is proud to contribute to Malaysia’s ambitious renewable energy targets of 31 per cent by 2025 and 40 per cent by 2035.” The feasibility study aims to assess the potential for the large scale floating solar installation. The evaluation will encompass technical feasibility, environmental impact and economic viability to determine if the project can be successfully implemented. If deemed viable, the floating solar installation could not only strengthen Sarawak’s renewable energy capacity but also position it as a model for floating solar projects across the region. Condat expands in China Following the launch of its new plant in Qingdao in China’s Shandong province, Condat announced a milestone in its growth strategy in China, as it finalised the acquisition of Chinese company ShuangQi/Gaosen, a local solution provider for wire drawing lubricants. The acquisition strengthens Condat’s presence in the Chinese market and further establishes its position in steel cord applications. Specialising in the formulation and manufacture of sodium soaps, ShuangQi/Gaosen will complement Condat’s existing portfolio. In addition to consolidating its market presence, Condat is enhancing its product range, particularly in the steel cord segment. Its range includes precoating treatments, patenting polymers and next-generation soluble lubricants. These solutions are specifically designed for high- and low carbon steel wire applications, including saw wire, PC wire and welding wire. Condat’s new soluble lubricants feature formulas that deliver performance while adhering to CSR commitments. Developed to meet future regulatory requirements, they are claimed to improve both performance and environmental impact by replacing controversial raw materials and offering a better working environment for the users.

Condat has developed new lubricants for wire-drawing processes

Designed for demanding wire-drawing processes, the lubricants enable the drawing of high-tensile steel wires and recently developed alloys. Condat www.condat-lubricants.com Monitoring wall thickness during energy cable production Wuxi Huacheng Cable Co, based in Jiangyin City, China, manufactures special high-temperature-resistant cables, using Sikora’s X-Ray 6000 Pro to ensure optimal processes and product quality. Since 2018, Huacheng Cable has used seven sets of Sikora X-ray technology for quality control in seven new energy cable extrusion production lines. Quality and performance requirements for new energy cables are high. All parameters, such as diameter, wall thickness and eccentricity, must comply with specifications. Several measuring techniques for quality control are available, but Sikora says that its X-ray technology is a leading method for measuring new energy cable. “With the X-Ray 6000 Pro we can use the full potential for process optimisation and to deliver the highest product quality to our customers,” said Haihua Min, general manager at Huacheng Cable. Directly integrated in the extrusion line, the system allows constant monitoring of the wall thickness of up to three material layers, using the minimum tolerance value. Safety margins can be reduced, and the automatic control keeps the dimensions within the specification. Sikora AG www.sikora.net
