40 th anniversary celebrations and Düsseldorf

Issue after issue of Wire & Cable ASIA , we celebrate the fact that companies reach milestone anniversaries. Whether this is 10, 20 or 100 years or even more, it is something to be justifiably proud of.

And in this issue, we are taking a little space to highlight the 40 th anniversary of Intras – publishers of Wire & Cable ASIA .

We take great pride in being ‘here to serve the industries we helped to shape’. Good news, bad news, celebrations, corporate mergers, the latest technological developments all feature in our magazine, which caters to the needs of the industry in general, and our readers and advertisers. The challenges remain, as with every business, in a fast-paced and ever-changing world, but we stand by our message in serving industries that are at the forefront of development and growth worldwide. There is a brief history of our company, starting on page 44. It is fitting that we celebrate this anniversary in the year of the staging of wire and Tube Düsseldorf. Our founder, John Hogg, played an instrumental role in setting up international wire and cable shows, including the founding of ‘wire’ – the leading international wire and cable exhibition, now organised by Messe Düsseldorf, and to which most of our readers and advertisers will be heading in a few short weeks. More than 1,400 wire exhibitors will occupy The Fairgrounds site on the side of the River Rhine from 15 to 19 April for the week-long exhibition, which attracts thousands of visitors from all corners of the world. It is a coming together of old friends, the meeting of new ones and all related to the wire and cable industries. New advancements in technology, ideas and changes will all be the centre of attention as companies announce new products and launches.

“Our Planet Mark journey began a few years ago when we first achieved the certification,” said Colin Hughes, group manager at WMC. “Since then, our commitment to creating a better future for our planet has only grown stronger. “Furthermore, an achievement like this is a testament to the unwavering efforts of our entire team and the positive impact we have made on the environment.” In the last 18 months, WMC’s efforts in the area of sustainability have been recognised by industry awards including finalist in the Made in Wales Award (sustainable/ethical manufacturer of the year), and the Make UK Manufacturing Awards for the Wales region (energy and sustainability category). It was also a finalist at the Materials Recycling World (MRW) and National Recycling Awards (circular economy initiative – business model and recycling excellence). Copper is an almost 100 per cent recyclable material and can be used repeatedly, while MgO is a natural element of great abundance. The use of pure raw materials makes the cables suitable for most environments, as they will not deteriorate or age. WMC states that this also reduces onward maintenance and replacement to practically zero. Planet Mark certification can also offer buyer confidence. We will continue to develop and deliver innovative cold welding solutions as the industry evolves.” Ongoing research and development enables PWM to meet manufacturers’ changing needs. The company introduced air/hydraulic cold welders on trolleys in the 1980s and 1990s. These user-friendly and energy efficient mobile machines can be easily moved to the work area, saving effort and reducing downtime. The 1990s also saw a requirement for more powerful machines to weld large diameter rod. PWM says that its P1500 model, for non-ferrous material up to 30mm, was the first hydraulically powered, electronically controlled,

Sikora among top employers A survey of the top employers in Germany’s medium-sized business

Employing technology to seize growth opportunities Reversing UK manufacturing’s poor record for adopting new technology will be tackled at MACH 2024. The Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) aims to promote growth by using the event to launch its new Knowledge Hubs initiative. campaigning for greater adoption of new technology for some time. It will expand upon this at MACH 2024, which opens at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, on 15 April. Each hub is being managed by one of the specialist centres from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

A series of new Knowledge Hubs will focus on educating manufacturers in when and how to adopt new technologies. The hubs, which will have dedicated stands within the various exhibition zones, will each focus on a particular type of technology: automation and robotics; data and artificial intelligence; energy efficiency; additive manufacturing; and tooling.

The Catapult network collaborates with thousands of businesses across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, space, health, digital, energy, transport and telecoms. The MTC at Ansty Park, Coventry, UK, is one of the largest public-sector investments in UK manufacturing, with facilities to prove innovative manufacturing processes and technologies. The AMRC, across several sites in Yorkshire, UK, works with companies of all sizes, to help them improve productivity. The programme will showcase the latest technology to exhibitors, helping manufacturers learn more about the potential offered by such technology, as well as when to adopt it and how to implement it to best effect. The initiative has been given a major boost with the announcement by UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt of £4.5bn of funding to support advanced manufacturing. RSB as core technology for SBQ bar mill line Chinese steel producer Changzhou Dongfang Special Steel Co Ltd has signed a contract with Friedrich Kocks for the supply of an RSB® 370++/4 in 5.0 design. The reducing and sizing block will be installed in the company’s special bar quality rolling mill in Changzhou, China. Changzhou Dongfang Special Steel produces three million metric tons of long products annually. Its portfolio includes alloyed carbon steels, spring steels, ball bearing steels, high pressure boiler tube steels and gear steels. The focus is on SBQ products for demanding processing industries. In the city of Changzhou, the steel producer operates three mill lines – one for producing steel profiles and two for steel bars with diameters between 20 and 150mm. The three-roll technology from Kocks allows flexibility and productivity of the production process in the new 800,000t/a SBQ rolling mill, after 21 stands in H/V arrangement. In the small bar mill line, the RSB 370++/4 has been designed according to the individual requirements of Changzhou Dongfang Special Steel, in order to produce straight bars in a finished size range from Ø 20 to 80mm with tight dimensional tolerance.

The scope of supply includes remote control for stand and guide adjustments; equipment for the roll shop; and the hardware and software for the advanced Bamicon Octopus, which assists operators in stand and guide preparation and supports the entire tooling process.
