RD-A: Rosendahl’s core insulation line for LAN cables

sheathing technology. The company’s extrusion technology in combination with a high-precision gas-dosing system ensures long-term process stability and fine and uniform foam structure. The foaming process – one of the Rosendahl’s core competencies – has recently been enhanced with the help of artificial intelligence. A self-learning algorithm continuously observes the entire process and matches individual parameters to achieve the best results for diameter and capacitance. It intervenes in a targeted and foresighted manner and works quickly and with precision, harmonising of all of the interdependent parameters. Rosendahl Nextrom says that the resulting reduced process variations allow for tighter tolerances, leading to improved electrical properties. In addition, due to the fast adjustments of the process controller, start-up scrap is significantly reduced.

sheathing required is significantly higher. Cat8 cables used for IoT applications also have the power supply built in, and must withstand very high internal temperatures. This leads to increased demands on the corresponding cable and consequently on the cable manufacturing processes. For optimum data transmission, the LAN cable must have a consistent diameter, as well as perfect ovality and centricity throughout all of the layers. This ensures that the metallic conductors run parallel to each other and offer no room for signal attenuation. It is also important to prevent periodic vibrations on the production line, as these can lead to interference points that reduce the data signal in the finished cable. To ensure that the theoretical transmission rates of Cat8 cables can also be maintained in reality, stable production is key. All of the machines and processes, from payoff to take-up, must be properly coordinated. Rosendahl Nextrom has process know how and experience in insulation and

Category 8, the latest generation of LAN cables, are among the most powerful data cables available. In theory, they can transfer data at up to 40 Gb per second at a bandwidth of more than two gigahertz. To put this into practice, however, the cable production must be flawless. 40 Gb/sec is four times more than a 6A cable can transmit. With this upgrade, Cat8 cables are particularly popular for use in data centres and server rooms, driving the transition to higher data loads. Higher performance requires more sophisticated cable design. With Cat8, the quality of shielding, insulation and

Rebar minimill set for South Korea YK Steel, South Korea, has commissioned SMS group to supply a new minimill with integrated melting, casting and rolling, and including all electrical and automation systems.

In addition to being a strategic decision to underscore the company’s growth plans, the new plant project aims to achieve more sustainable production. To produce the steel, YK Steel plans to use a 115-ton DC Edge® electric arc furnace and an Aura® charging system, which is operated with 100 per cent steel scrap. The five-strand caster, which will produce square billets 150mm thick, can achieve casting speeds of up to 4m/min by using Convex mould technology. The cast billets are conveyed into the downstream rolling mill via a hot-charging roller table. This is connected to a walking beam furnace that offers a production capacity of 140 tons of billets per hour and is fitted with low-NOx recuperative burners. The rolling mill consists of 18 new housingless stands and a water cooling system for controlling the rolled stock temperature and for quenching. YK Steel will use the new plant to produce reinforcing steel with diameters ranging from 10 to 35mm. The products manufactured in the minimill will be sold as part packages from 6 to 12m long with a maximum weight of 450 to 550kg, and large packages weighing up to two tons. SMS group GmbH www.sms-group.com

Instead of relocating and upgrading an existing plant, originally planned at the end of 2021, YK Steel opted for a completely new minimill, allowing it to benefit from the latest technologies. The minimill will start production in 2025 at the company’s Dangjin site.

World-first magnesium extraction process production

the plant will harvest magnesium metal from a fly ash resource – a waste stream from brown coal power generation. In terms of environmental sustainability, the project converts nearly 100 per cent of the resource into valuable commodities. The released CO 2 emissions are claimed to be approximately 50 per cent less than comparable magnesium production plants. “Demand for magnesium worldwide is strong,” said David Paterson, chief executive officer at LMG. “It has the best strength-to-weight ratio of all common structural metals and is increasingly used in the manufacture of car parts, laptop computers, mobile phones and power tools. Currently, the Latrobe Valley contains 25mn tons inventory of fly ash; that is why it so important for us to have a reliable partner in this project.”

Tenova, a developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, has been awarded a contract by Latrobe Magnesium Limited (LMG), a company based in Australia. The scope of work is the engineering, supply and supervision of a magnesium oxide (MgO) production plant in Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia – a demonstration plant using a world first process of combined hydromet/ thermal reduction. As part of the first phase of the project, Tenova will supply a magnesium oxide plant with spray roaster technology, with a production capacity of 300kg/h. MV cable testing facility in Dubai fully operational Following a second-phase investment of £1.2mn, BASEC’s medium voltage cable testing facility, based in its new regional lab in Dubai, UAE, is now fully operational.

the MV cable industry by helping both cable manufacturers and stakeholders. BASEC offers a full testing solution for the MV cable industry by bringing European quality and cable testing speciality to the Middle East. The unique location will make it easier for all cable manufacturers worldwide, especially those in the Middle East, to send their heavy MV cable samples to Dubai.” The lab was purpose-built to achieve the objective of high quality testing, with four earth electrodes to obtain a low PD sensitivity in the presence of background noise (<1pC). Cables certified by BASEC are subjected to rigorous recurring tests and audits with annual surveillance. Critical tests for MV include partial discharge test, bending test, Tan Delta – concerning voltage, Tan Delta – concerning temperature, heating cycle test, impulse voltage test, DC voltage test on over sheath, and adherence of screens at short circuit temperature test. BASEC www.basec.org.uk

BASEC (British Approvals Service for Cables) states that the new testing laboratory will significantly increase its scope of testing to further complement investments made in solar, EV, data communication and compound analytics testing. It will support manufacturers in the MV cable market to verify competitive designs and raw materials to ensure that quality is not compromised. The facility furthers BASEC’s aim of becoming the preferred testing and certification partner to the worldwide cable industry, and builds upon other recent investments to add capability, technology and global reach. CEO Tony Lioveri said, “BASEC has been working in partnership with cable manufacturers for over 50 years and has a strong brand and heritage of being the mark of quality and safety. Phase 2 investment and extension into medium voltage testing is another milestone

ASAŞ orders extrusion line and energy-efficient HybrEx line ASAŞ Alüminyum, an aluminium manufacturer based in Turkey, is investing in extrusion technology from SMS group to produce profile sizes that it says cannot currently be produced anywhere in Europe. Having already used SMS equipment for many years, ASAŞ has ordered two new aluminium extrusion lines: a 150 MN extrusion and tube line and a 45 MN HybrEx® line. SMS states that the 150 MN extrusion press will be Europe’s largest extrusion line and will open up new opportunities for ASAŞ on the international market for extra-large extrusion profiles. As a systems supplier, SMS will deliver the two extrusion lines from a single source. The 150 MN line is equipped with modern plant components to produce finish-sawn profiles up to 30m in length. The package includes induction furnaces from SMS sub sidiary IAS, a 150 MN tube and extrusion press built according to the latest SMS design, and a quench and complete handling equipment by OMAV, also an SMS group subsidiary. The line will produce profiles up to 900mm thick and 450mm high, from 18" or 24" aluminium billets. Tubes with various wall thicknesses can also be produced. With the 45 MN HybrEx extrusion line, ASAŞ is expanding its production capacity for the growing automotive market, in

addition to the HybrEx line ordered in 2021. The new line will be equipped with a gas-fired billet furnace and an induction furnace, a 45 MN HybrEx extrusion press with an energy-efficient hybrid drive system, and a quench and run-out system with profile stretcher and precise in-line profile cutting. Compared to conventional extrusion presses, the hybrid drive technology allows energy savings of 30 to 50 per cent, according to SMS, and less non-productive time also boosts productivity. The line is capable of producing profiles with a maximum width of 400mm and a height of up to 280mm. The plants are scheduled to go into operation in 2025. Four of SETIC’s lines

Technologically advanced and eco-friendly rotating machines

Combined with double twist bunchers, SETIC payoffs are supplied in different versions according to the application (LAN, special, control, industrial, robot, IIoT, communication), the reel diameter and the product quality. The range includes double backtwist payoffs, single backtwist payoffs, triple twist payoffs, and flexible solutions that can work in two different modes: double backtwist or triple twist. SETIC and Pourtier have also developed a range of single twist machines from 630 to 2,500mm. High-speed dual single twist lines, with one single twist used as payoff and one as take-up for different sizes of bobbins, offer three solutions in one line: full backtwist laying-up line, and two separate laying-up lines (with the possibility to make cable in multiple passes using a central backtwist payoff). high-quality round or sectoral compact ed strands of 7, 19, 37 or 61 wires. The con centric construction enables speeds of up to 500 tpm, while the multi-wire process keeps the line short. The bobbin-less solution with basket type payoffs is composed of independent modules of two or four reels with three wires each, individually motorised by AC motors. The flexible line allows a reduction of copper remainders as well as saving energy via a power recovery system. In addition to the large double twist stranders/cablers, SETIC offers a comprehensive range of high-speed double twist bunchers. The 630/800mm double twist bunchers are designed for bunching 7, 19 or 37 wires (unilay construction) or laying-up of insulated wires for data/instrumentation/special cables. Claimed advantages include a single-bow design, full AC motors, reduced mainte- nance (no encoder, Bluetooth system) and the energy-saving GreenBow2+ design.

SETIC and Pourtier produce a wide range of rotating machines. In response to demand for higher production output combined with high product quality and very compacted conductors, the companies offer two major next generation rotating machine solutions dedicated to unilay or counter stranding lay conductors. SETIC’s TC 2000-4M is a high-speed 2,000mm double twist for stranding large bare conductors from seven to 61 wires at up to 1,000 tpm, using copper or aluminium, round or straight sectors (61-wire unilay production – compressed and compacted), up to 400mm 2 Cu and 500mm 2 Alu. The machine has a compact and modern design: a bobbin-less solution with double-basket type payoffs, and featuring all-AC motors, single bow, Bluetooth transmission and a large pulley for machine and capstan. Pourtier’s COS1200 high-speed and pow er-regenerative concentric stranding/ armouring line is designed to produce
