Locating breakdowns in kilometres of medium- and high-voltage cables has traditionally been carried out offline after disruption has occurred. However, that makes measurement labour- and time-intensive, as extensive investigations are often required to find the breakdown. As a result, Highvolt developed a new measuring device that finds breakdowns quickly and simply. The HiRES Locator is a solution not only for grid operators and power utilities that have to monitor increasingly complex cable systems, but also for cable manufacturers, who can benefit from adding the device into their test procedures for quality assurance. During high-voltage tests or in ongoing operation, a digital recorder is connected to the cable to locate breakdowns immediately as they occur.
