A fascinating mix awaits 1,400 exhibitors. 70,000 visitors from 80 countries. The hustle and bustle of exhibition halls teeming with new technology. There’s a fascinating mix of sellers and buyers in a friendly and business-like environment. The biennial staging of wire – and running concurrently Tube – is now just a matter of weeks away, and judging from our coverage already, attendance figures are likely to be broken during the five-day exhibition. As the industry in general goes from strength to strength, despite the recent trade dispute between the USA and China, it is encouraging that growth is expected worldwide as companies embrace change, Industry 4.0 and green challenges facing everyone. For the first time in Düsseldorf, a new section of the wire show covering fasteners and springs will make its debut in halls 16 and 17, embracing the entire value chain for the industry. Also for the first time, ‘ecoMetals trails’ will highlight companies that have taken a sustainable, environmentally friendly, energy-saving and innovative stand in the industry. Some of these companies will form part of guided tours as the environment comes to the fore.
Wire & Cable ASIA and sister publication EuroWire will also be freely distributed from our stands 11D26 and 1FO01 at the newly built South entrance. Our leading tube magazines – Tube & Pipe Technology and Tube Products INTERNATIONAL – will also be given away free from stands 1FO01 and 04E44.

First SheathEx 400 installed in Russia
BWE has installed and commissioned the first SheathEx™ 400 machine in Russia. Rybinskkabel LLC, established in 1949, is a major supplier of cable products in Russia. BWE worked with the company to develop a new cable application for BWE’s SheathEx technology. Following the success of the larger 550 model for ‘seamless’ corrugated aluminium sheathing of high-voltage cables, Rybinskkabel had a new application for the smaller 400 model. An oil-impregnated cable is fed directly into the SheathEx 400 machine. A seamless and smooth aluminium sheath is extruded from 2 x 9.5mm Ø aluminium rods, directly onto the cable. The aluminium sheath is immediately cooled without any cable burn, then automatically coiled onto a large cable drum. The machine was installed and commissioned in record time and BWE continues to work with Rybinskkabel to enhance and optimise the technology. BWE Ltd www.bwe.co.uk

Robotics opportunity for cable manufacturers ❍ The use of robotics can improve competitiveness
there may be only four different SKUs (stock keeping units) for an iPhone. For the cable industry, however, there could be thousands of different product iterations. Cable and wire manufacture is rarely off-the-shelf, and there will need to be significant advancements in robotics technology before it can be rolled out at pace to this industry. Even then, it is unlikely that it will fully replace the human workforce. Implementing robotics still requires in-depth assessment and continual review, and relies on the capability of the human mind in anticipating issues that may lie ahead. Cimteq Ltd https://cimteq.com
service a large contract, the use of robotics can improve competitiveness. The rise in popularity of robots also presents an opportunity for cable manufacturers involved in the assembly of robotic cables. However, robots are not cheap, and there is the added cost of assessing the factory to identify where the use of robotics might make the most impact. It can take several years before a return on investment is achieved. What might dictate the adoption of robotics in the cable industry is how adaptable the technology is to a linear industry. Robotics are already well embedded in discrete industries such as car or mobile phone manufacture. In the mobile phone industry, for example,
THE use of robotics in manufacturing has come some way since the first industrial robot patent in 1954 and General Motors’ early adoption in 1962. Many roles in the factory environment are better suited to robots, for example where parts are too small for human eyes, or where workers need to be protected from high-risk tasks. Where work is mundane or repetitive, using robots brings the added advantage of allocating human resources to more skilled work, such as engineering or programming. Robots require no climate control and can operate continuously in lights-out situations, long after human workers have gone home. Where manufacturers have lost business due to an inability to scale up in time to

Cimteq Ltd https://cimteq.com

Weighing in on electrical harnesses
WIRE harness or cable assembly: while the terms are used interchangeably by many, there are fundamental differences between the two. Since individual cables are already protected by their own exterior sheaths, a wire harness presents a simple exterior sheath to bundle the wires and protect them from their environment. A cable assembly, however, provides a more heavy-duty material that not only keeps cable organised in the same way as a wire harness but also shields the bundle from specific environmental factors such as heat, friction, moisture and compression. Which of the two approaches a manufacturer opts for will depend on the operating environment. In either instance, the organised set of wires, terminals and connectors relay information and electric power and therefore play a critical role in connecting key components of end products, such as within cars or washing machines. Each electrical harness or cable assembly bundle must demonstrate two specific qualities: geometrically, they must fit into a specific space – in some cases also serving a larger network of electrical wiring; and electrically, they must protect the cables from damage and adhere to the highest safety levels and standards for the industry in question. Creating the perfect electrical harness or cable assembly begins with a robust design and manufacture of cable and wire − a process that is supported by Cimteq’s suite of software products. CableBuilder’s iterative approach to cable design allows engineers to model variations of the end product before committing to the cost of production. Similarly, the cost of production can be reduced by spotting non-compliance issues early through Cimteq’s cable manufacturing system CableMES. Testing times for offshore cables High-voltage engineering specialist EDS HV Group has completed a cable testing campaign for Vattenfall at Horns Rev 1, after the wind farm experienced network issues. For the first time for the offshore wind industry, EDS used damped AC testing (DAC) to collect partial discharge (PD) and tanδ data to clarify the condition of the array cables and subject the entire array system to a high-voltage withstand test. Using damped AC to test all array cables from one single point on the offshore platform avoided multiple transfers of equipment and personnel. EDS HV Group www.edshv.com
Investing in software designed with the complexities of cable and wire in mind − not just as products in their own right, but also how they perform as an electrical harness or cable assembly − allows cable manufacturers to develop an end product that is bespoke to client requirements. Increasing bandwidths with core insulation lines ❍ Increasing bandwidths with core insulation lines from Rosendahl
Nearly every area of a building can be controlled from anywhere by using modern sensors, whether lighting, heating or security cameras. To consume as little space as possible, cables must be highly sensitive while being very small. The Core Insulation Line from Rosendahl was developed and has been constantly improved for producing these special products. Gas plays a significant role in the production of high-speed data cables. Too high or too low gas amounts can have consequences for the process stability and for the quality of the product. In combination with Rosendahl’s RIO line control system and the newly developed gas systems, production processes can be made more effective: scrap and defective products can be reduced; the reproducibility of products can be increased; and the flexibility of lines can be improved.
HIGH-SPEED for applications that require an optimal transfer rate and product stability, such as those used in speciality data communication and telecomm- unications technology, can be produced using Rosendahl’s Core Insulation Line. The constant expansion of the worldwide telecommunications network is one of the essential factors for the rising demand of all kinds of data cables, and technologies in this field are developing rapidly. A few years ago, transfer rates of a few MHz were common; now, higher GHz rates are required. The transfer rates of 5G are not only of use for surfing the Internet or for making telephone calls. In communications between machines, such as in the medical field, the speed of data transfer has a more important role. Demand for the cables required for these applications is growing steadily. data cables
