Payoffs, take-ups and

winding systems L ike most industrial systems that find a permanent place on the factory floor, wire winding grew out of practical necessity and can be explained in very basic terms. The first element is a take-up spool, driven usually by a DC motor. A payoff, feeding from the production line, directs the wire, or optical fibre, onto the rotating spool. The third essential component is a linear drive assembly – traverse or traversing nut – to guide the material as it is wound onto the take-up. What could be simpler? The short answer, and the correct one, is – nothing. But classic does not mean static. The traditional winding system offers virtually limitless potential for refinement and improvement, and the companies whose products and services are showcased here are actively engaged in that ongoing effort. In a period increasingly influenced by considerations of cost-cutting, energy efficiency, space conservation, and minimal maintenance, they can do no less.
